Do any of you guys happen to have a mfg, and part # for a short oil filter for a small block (360)? The engine is in a 65 Valiant and the filter is too close to the torsion bar to remove and replace. I have an oil filter adapter but I don't have time to install it now. Just put the engine and trans in yesterday trying to get the car ready to ship to Deer Park Wa. to our new home and my new heated 36'x48' shop. Once there I'll get everything right. For now I'm just trying to get it ready to ship. Thanks for any info, Litz

Why don't you just re orientate the filter adapter to allow the full size filter to fit? I have a small block in my 64 and I use the full size PH8 Fram filter. The PH16 Fram is a short version. Here is how I set mine up.

PS sorry didn't notice you're being pressed for time.

Mopar 090 $6.29 at Walmart.
There's two I made O'Reilly price match. The gal said we only price match our competition. I said well when Walmart sells them for 629 and you sell them for 799 they are your competition!

How lazy can people get? Rather than look up a filter number. Just post it. And have 7 other people do your homework for you. Wow!

Thanks for the kind words Pal. If you had read the post you would have seen that I'm in the process of moving and in a BIG hurry. Thanks for the BULLSHIT comment

If you decide to use an oil filter 90 degree adapter... A Fram PH3600 is as long as a PH8a but smaller diameter with a drain back valve (at least it used to have a anti drain back valve)
Its an old Ford filter.
Good luck on the move.

I thought the Fram PH43 was the short filter....going off memory. Not that I would choose fram but you can cross it to whatever you like. I prefer wix. I also run the large filter whenever possible.
I have a long filter on my 73 340 dart sport. The 90° adapter has to be clocked just right to be able to get it on and not rub. Although I recently found one of my engine mounts was sagging pretty good so that may be why it was so close.

PH 3614 is the smallest that you can find. Fits all Mopar engines. Just a thought.

Well see the thing is this thread is useful because some ppl like myself didnt even know that there was a shorter option! Now I do and I'm sure someone else will learn something from this also. So if you have nothing to add to the conversation dont waste your time to comment and move on to a different thread. As my momma said if you cant say nothing good dont say nothing at all. Thanks for being "lazy" and creating this thread I learned something new.

I know most cringe at the word Fram. I don't know why but I remember the PH numbers. If you look up say a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser there are many brands that cover that size. The PT Turbo charged cars get a little larger filter PH 3600. STP and Wal Mart brands use the same numbers as Fram. I change oil more often than most so I like the small filter because you don't have to fight to get it on and off. Plenty of working room. I usually buy Pureolator Gold but darn if I can remember those numbers :BangHead: Just a thought.

and then those of us at work with nothing better to do than troll FABO, would not have enough to keep us from doing something stupid to our co-workers. trust me, questions like these are for my own good

PH43 is a good short one. I have headers, and I need a short one. Size isn't always important.

Hey,
I want to add a bit more now that I’ve read the post and the originator is excited to get info. I’m not a fan of “lazy” nor do I follow suit. But I do like when I’m in a hurry and info is there - I grab it. Personally just doing it gives you one of two results... 1) it works 2) it does not work and you need to re adjust.

A question a while back is about cringing over using Fran oil filters. Well years ago they made one of the best oil filters you could buy at a retailer was at the time. (going back to the 70’s and 80”s I’m referencing)
When Fran was bought out shortly after (mid 80’s) the filters were redesigned for cost cutting methods. The actual spring inside the filter for by-pass was changed to a wavy pressed steel spring and this made higher pressure oil slip by the filter. This allowing dirty oil by into the engine. That’s is how I remember the reason Fram lost its credibility in the aftermarket world. Last time I opened up oil filters, Napa Golds were an actual spring not a pressed plate.

Also for your info- when picking a filter there are other things to consider. Not just “does it fit?” 1) what is the filter made of (the medium- synthetic or natural... paper) 2) what is the filtration rate (what micron of particulate will be filtered out before it slips by) 3) is the gasket the correct size and not a tad smaller in diameter (could blow out under high pressure) 4) can it withstand the oil pump pressure you want- (will it blow apart with a high volumn oil pump or can it withstand 75psi at 212 degrees (f) for hours.
I imagine there are lots more factors to Consider in oil filter selection. Some is personal choice and some is education. More expensive is not always better and viceaversa.
I took a class thru GM in the later 80’s all about oil filters and fuel filters and “why ac Delco was better for the cost.” I learned a lot, but still learning. I’m not selling ACDelco filters at all. But the teacher had 24 oil filters cut open- all the same filter... different makers. The results were amazing. One filter was steel strip with little holes pressed in holding what looked like burlap. It was a quick lube filter. (Yea $19.99 oil change) others like Eagle synthetic from Mobil oil (not sure if around any more) was like a piece of art. Machines seal surfaces, filter was reinforced . Anyhow- try a few filters and being careful- cut them open and See what’s inside. You will enjoy the education. Where gloves and safety glasses as the metal housings are thin like razors and will cut you.
Hope I added to this thread and not wasted time.
Joe

Me three.....I won't even run fram on a lawnmower.

I run fram in my truck my wifes I have never had issues with fram I use the tough guard ones it's the mid shelf fram you have the regular ones the tough tough guards and the ultra guard. The ultra guard is supposed to be for synthetic only so I dont get it. I changed my oil last week and while at the store the thought was what is the difference in all these brands they have the the Walmart brand for 1.67 all the way up to one that was 12 bucks. I think it was k&n? But with such a gap in price what are you really paying for? Same with oil brands? This may be a new thread topic. Lol

I have compared fram ph8a filters with microgaurd o Reilly house filters and the microgaurd wins every time. Fram is junk it just looks cool. There is also a video of this on YouTube . People buy out company's that are well known brand names so they can make better over head by using Chinese quality parts with a brand names or logos pretty much your buying the name not the part.

Go buy a Fram and buy the direct cross in a brand like Wix or Baldwin. Cut them apart and post up which brand you will be buying in the future. Night and day difference!
I got the table to seperate into columns so it doesn't need decoded. Hope it helps.

Oil Filters
WIX ----- Baldwin ----- Length
51515 ----- B2 --------- 5.197"
51068 ----- B233 -------- 4.338
51085 ----- B34 -------- 3.836
51348 ----- B7491 ------- 3.404
51335 ----- B7221 ------- 2.483

"Just Look up an oil filter number..." sure that will give you 12 manufacturers different part numbers of the same dimensional filter. Adaptable cross reference? EZ enough if you got a lines master catalog in front of you and know the: thread pitch, gasket ID and OD, exterior OD and height of the filter. Or you could just ask any of us if we did this 12 years ago and remember what we used. I say ask, cant hurt. Some guys love to help, makes 'em feel good.
