1968 Barracuda notch
(73) 440 charger motor with 727 trans.

all stock - recently replaced the distributor with an ebay distributor the original one had busted threads to both vacuum bolts. and faulty internals giving me bad ignition timing 'tune'

anyways i bolted this thing on and it turns over but no start after a few second it pops and the smell of gasoline everywhere.

advice?
dumb question-i know->
faulty distributor? (ebay distributor) of course i was stretching it there but i thought id give it a try.

Rotor phasing off, or you have the plug wires off

I would start by using a piston stop to ensure #1 is at TDC, your balancer is good, and the rotor is actually pointing to where you have #1 plug wire

Firing order going the right direction? Remember,... small block and big block go opposite directions

2 factory small block distributors I had were clocked differently. When slot on shafts were same direction, rotors were different direction. Enough to rotate my plug wires 1 spot around dist cap. Might be it?

on the mopar distributor the rotor is in align with the slot on the bottom of the shaft...on aftermarket distributor the rotor and shaft do not align...about 90 degrees off....

two ways to fix it....move the intermediate shaft so that the aftermarket distributor rotor points to where NO. 1 plug wire is...or rewire the cap to put no. 1 plug where the rotor is now points....this is a small block but it shows how much the rotor has moved...and then you can see where the intermediate shaft had to be move to get the aftermarket rotor back to oem rotor position

"HOW TO" install a distributor:

As mentioned above if there is ANY question of timing marks, use a piston stop to verify them

With that done there are only two ways to verify no1 is on compression, "ready to fire."

1....If either valve cover is off, and timing marks are at TDC, look at either no1 or no6 valves. They will either be both closed, or both pretty much evenly open. Rotate the engine a small amount and see if they move. If not, that cylinder is on compression

2.....Otherwise, remove no1 plug, stick your finger in the hold and bump around, feel for start of compression. When you feel it, look at the marks, they will be "coming up."

Do NOT set the marks on TDC but rather where it is that you want timing, IE 20 BTC, etc

Now drop in the dist as close as the rotor will come to same as the old one. As mentioned above, some are not indexed the same DOES NOT MATTER

Rotate the dist. body so it sits "where you want" so far as wiring, vacuum can, etc

Note which cap tower the rotor is "coming to" (remember B/ RB rotates CCW) and use that as the no1 plug wire

Retard the dist body (ccw on big block) and slowly bring it advanced (cw) until the trigger device appears "made."

YOU CAN ALSO power up the ignition, and move the dist body back and forth to trigger a spark. Move less and less, slower and slower, until you find the trigger point and leave it. OR crank the engine, set the timing "on the starter" with a light

Start it up

All this about indexing and drive gear position is only for appearance. You can close your eyes and throw the gear/ shaft into the engine, and throw the dist in after it and it will run fine. Just bring up no1 on compression, and plug the no1 wire in wherever the rotor points

HAVENT HAD A chance to look it over guys - but this is all very good info i will revise my install and let you all know.

:)

THanks

I have done this job many times on many different engines and I have never thought about it like that before iv always indexed my no 1 point was with the rotor. That is very good info thanks I'm sure that will come in handy down the road.

Trust me. It ain't the distributor. lol

do you realize you can take the distributor out or before you set in and connect the two wires...spin distributor by hand with the coil wire a next to something metal to see if it fires....done that many time to verily that the ignition is going fire before I try to fire a new engine.

Cars up and running guys
just need a good timing set and carb. tune.

it was 180 off - fixed it in a matter of a minute or two.

ever since i got a new vehicle ive lost all interest on my shark and had hardly had any time to work on it and drive it. :(

thanks again for all your help as always.
