66 dart LED prototype working for now

HAH I don't like taking picture, they are there to remind me where everything goes. I have a part I've been staring at for an hour and for the life of me I can't figure out where it goes other than on the car somewhere. time to dig through the picture again! I think it's a window stop but can't be sure.

Lol have a pic of it?

yep sure do! found it this morning. and I was right it's a window stop for the front door, dang memory aint all gone !:coffee2: hmm now where did I put the picture??? oops memory's gone again!

Nice work! Who would have thunk this stuff with exterior lighting was so involved.

I sprayed my cargo lamp red & ordered a red LED to convert into a third brake lamp (CHMSL) but after reading this thread, I got the red spray off & will keep the cargo lamp as a cargo lamp. LOL.

I have a convertible and a 3rd brake light or "CHMSL or Center High Mount Stop Light" as it called would have been a bit more body work for me to put in at the dutchmans panel. Yes I thought about putting it in but decided it was just too weird looking for the older convertible car plus a lot more work and I wanted to be DONE with body work.

I had a company make me some harness's for the 66's so I could change out my wife's 66 along with a couple other guys cars . I wanted all 4 light on my baby and so did they. works pretty good and since they used slantsixdans recommended Led replacement bulbs in the lights it didn't overload their main harness. I think these were the leds. if not I hope SSDan or someone that had seen his post will correct me. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A77TV4Q/?tag=joeychgo-20

The two (and only two) LED bulbs worth trying in place of an 1157 in a brake/tail light are these and these (this second link is the only type that has a chance of working in lamps that have fresnel lenses, that's the type with the round "bullseye" in the middle with a series of rings around it).

Front turn signals with fresnel lenses: outta luck; there's no legitimate amber or white LED bulb that will work with them. With the other kind—a reflector bowl behind the bulb and rectangular/square little pillow-shaped optics in the lens, the one to try is this one.

That "trying" language is on purpose; unlike with spec (filament) bulbs, physical fit doesn't guarantee adequate optical match-up between the bulb and the lamp, so you need to assess the performance of these bulbs in your particular lamps by comparing them side-by-side with the original incandescents as reasonably well described here.

Back-up lights are easy, that's always this one.

Don't forget, LEDs in the front and/or rear turn signals will necessitate a different turn signal flasher; that's this one (2-prong like original; connect its ground wire conveniently).

Sh'boom!

I will add to slantsixdan's post above by saying I use those Philips X-Treme red 1157s and their X-Treme white 1156s in one of my older vehicles, and they work righteously.

Just waiting on Canada Post to bring me a little something-something so I can add the Zevo 1157 ambers & the flasher units next week.

Buy 'em up now, folks, while you still can; they're being discontinued. Philips now has two lines of cheaper, inferior LED bulb on the market instead...neither of which puts out forward light, so they're useless for the fresnel-optic lamps on many of our old cars, as described in post № 80 of this thread. :-(

While supplies last, they're:
1156 white and 1157 red.

Are these or the Sylvania better?

Are these or the Sylvania better?

As described in post № 80 in this thread, the Sylvania type does not work in lamps with fresnel lens optics, only the soon-to-be-NLA Philips items linked work in those lamps, and there are a lot of those brake lamps on old cars like ours.

But there are also a lot of non-fresnel brake lamps on old cars (it varies by model and year). If your car has non-fresnel lights, then it's a "try both and see" deal, as per the link in post #80.

very good info, thx dan. I'm not super electrics knowledgeable, so I appreciate the advice. What's worse for my 09 Charger application, I don't have any reference manuals, and the computer control's effects are a big unknown. I don't even know if there are replaceable flashers (or where they're located)on it, let alone LED compatible flashers.

An '09 Charger has Fresnel optics and a small reflector up front; needs a bulb that produces light rearward and frontward. Stick to stock bulbs for now; wait and see what comes from Tungsram.

In the brake lights you could try these. "Try" being the key word. You'll need to carefully assess the performance of these bulbs in your particular lamps by comparing them side-by-side with the original incandescents as reasonably well described here.

No separate flasher on the '09 Charger; the flashing function is controlled directly by the BCM. Which means if you want to run LED bulbs in the front and/or rear you'd have to hack in "load resistors". That's these, but I don't like the odds of what happens to reliability when we start piercing wires and hacking in resistors to fool the computer. Also, the resistors run very hot; don't start any fires. If you decide to do this, at least don't use the fold-over-and-crunch "Scotchlok" type wire taps. Much better, more durably trouble-free result if you use Posi-Taps instead. If you'll get this assortment, you'll suddenly find uses for them (they're one of those products that you buy for a particular project, but then other uses for them keep popping up in front of you once you have them).

Really, though, on that car I'd stick with stock. There are aftermarket LED lamp assemblies—all of them are fraudulent garbage. If you want to improve the front and rear signals, you can make 'em brighter without creating new problems; put 3457s in the brake/tail lights and 3457A / 3457NA in the front turns. Still incandescent, but 25% brighter than the stock bulbs.

good advice. unfortunately, the brake/tail/turn are all in one "bulb", and both sockets on each rear lamp are activated together. So it's all, or nothing for me, for right now.

That is true. The export cars used a different taillight assembly, with the lower compartment split in two: an amber bulb for the turn signal (because that's required in most of the world) and a clear bulb for the reversing lamp. But the US/Canada/Mexico-spec cars with red combination stop-turn lights kinda handcuff you.

Could you give an opinion on this particular supplier/brand?

Yes: NO! That vendor is one of many making the same claims about the same trinkets. Fine to play with their stuff for dashboard and interior lighting where there's no safety consequence…not fine to put in a car's safety lights.
