Hey guys,

I'm thinking about improving the safety of my ride by picking up a set of aftermarket retractable 3 point seat belts for the front.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Any good experiences or bad with a product on the market?

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Mike

Not sure what year you are working on. I got my 3 point belts from Jegs. They have colors, and chrome lift type or push button style. Around $70 per seat. Not the best picture. You can just see it on the left side. The front seat was out,I just got the rear seat in.

Thanks for the reply Darter. Yeah, I definitely should have mentioned that the car is a 70 Swinger. It has the mount for a shoulder belt, but as far as I can tell there were never shoulder belts in the car. Do those Jegs belts have a drop section so the belt doesn't come across your neck?

When I first started dreaming about proper seat belts about 10 years ago I was looking at these ones:
http://xvengineering.com/products/xv-racing-products-3-point-retractable-belt-bucket-seats-black

But I'm not sure I want the XV logo on the release button. Yeah, it's a small thing, but it's a thing.

Does anyone else have any recommendations?

I installed mine in a 4 door sedan so I never checked into a drop because I could place them in the door post anywhere. And yes I reinforced the mounting.
There are several companies out there. Julieano is one and may have the belt and drop that you would need.

So... no advice an retractable seat belts, hey guys?

I guess seat belts aren't as exciting as talking about big horsepower. At least not until that moron in the German built SUV the makes a left turn right in front of you.

I need 3pt belts as well. I am eager to see suggestions from this post. Lets go safety first. Though mine is 66 dart, and no evidence of 3pt option so I would be drilling into the column somewhere. How to reinforce?

gdizzle.2 or 4 door sedans make the mounting point easier that a hard top. I found some where (goggle) that showed mounting for 3 points in older cars. One is the metal area for a 2 door hardtop next to the quarter glass.Look up aftermarket seat belts/mounting.Maybe ? Also I was told that starting in 68 SOME cars had the mounting point welded in at the headliner even though the third belt was not installed.I was too chicken to mess with the Valiants headliner to find it,afraid that it would fall apart. I do know that my 70 Dart had that third belt factory installed(Though never used back then) and had a clip near the sun visor that held it out of the way when not in use.

I have XV in my my Valiant with a high back bucket, really the logo is very small...if you really have safety concerns I would not worry about the XV logo, its really small....or you could peel them off.

The logo thing is really a non issue, now that I think about it.

How do the XV's fit? Do they look out of place at all, or do they look like they belong?

The Morris classics are a bit pricey, but there are some good deals on seatbelt plus.

The Mopar 1971-74, Retractable 3-Point Conversion Seat Belts for A, B & E Body w/ Bucket Seats look good, they have the drop so the belt doest go across your neck, but it looks like the receptacle isn't the stiff plastic covered belt - it looks like it's just a floppy belt.

Decisions, decisions!

Put the XV in my Duster with a front bench. Buckle side was too long and had it shortened.

Thanks Craig. I think I'm going to go with the XV's. No one has had anything bad to say about them, and the price sure is right.

Not to ressurect an old thread, as i was looking for ideas on pricing some old belts i have to sell, however i purchased new shoulder belts with a retractor mechanism, and an 8" belt dropdown for hardtop coupes from wesco performance. Got 2 front shoulder belts, 2 rear belts in black with chrome lift latch for $213 shipped

I have the same belts for a 71demon with bench seats. How does the retractor fit at the sides of the floor. Mine are huge and have been delaying installing them til I could talk to someone who had them in. Can you possibly post a picture of the setup? Thanks.

The retractor would not fit in the original seatbelt location. I had to make a bracket and move the retractor back.

Can u tell me exactly how you did that? Did it require welding a new mounting point?

Thanks.

I put the XV belts in my 69 cuda. It was originally a bench car converted to buckets and a console. They installed in the stock mounting holes with no problem. They work well except maybe there is a little more shoulder tension than I would like, but not a big deal. They seem to be good quality and were very reasonably priced.

You could just use a flat plate with a hole in each end, bolt one end to the captive nut inside the rocker panel where the current seat belt is attached and bolt the retractor to the other end. I was afraid in an accident the seatbelt retractor could possibly rotate so I put a small S bend in the plate, cut my carpet and a cut a slit in the inner rocker with an air die grinder cut off tool. I was able to feed the metal plate through the carpet and into the slit in the inner rocker panel and then bolt it down where the original seatbelt attached. The total length of the plant play are used is maybe 8 inches long

Pix for my 67 cuda notch. Upper attach point is where coat hook was. 68-69 cuda notch model the attach point is here, coat hook is moved back. Retractor is mounted in original lap belt hole, had to add a forward anchor for each belt. I cut these out from 3/16" thick square tubing. 1/8" thick reinforcement under the floor at the aft outboard front seat support on either side. Looks factory to me.

Theres a seatbelt place in florida that makes custom fit for A and B body, the retractor fits that same mount i have mine in, they didnt come with the 8" upper sash with D ring so they were a no go.

Top pic i was mocking them up. Upper point was just screw and washee where coat hook hole is just to hang it where its going to be. Ditto with the aluminum tape. This is a factory looking install. The retractor will still catch and lock even though it's on a slight angle

The XV seatbelts don’t require an extra mounting point on the bottom outside location. They have a dog leg bracket so that the retractor and the seatbelt mount to the same point. Saves a lot of work improvising a second mounting hole. Attached is an internet photo. I can post one of mine if anyone wants it.

Mike,
It would be great if you could post a few pictures of your setup. Upper and lower attachment points would be much appreciated. Thanks,
Al graham

Hard to see the black on black, but the retractor and the outside bottom lap belt connect to the one original mounting hole on the bottom outside.

The shoulder harness mount also goes in the original mounting hole.

The retractors are a little finicky, but work ok after you get used to them.

I'm going to have to see if I can find a set of XV belts. I have original 1976 belts and the double retractors are a *****. One moves, the other doesn't. Get the one that's not moving going and the other locks up. What a pain in the ***.
