Timing way off..help.

You know your distributor might have slipped. Retarding your timing. You did put a timing light on it,right? Just checking....
Yes and if I correct the timing with turning the distributor it revs better but still not right..kind of boggy like spark gets weak...

Your ignition box,all it is is a switch. It fires the coil when told to. It works or it doesnt. If it is messing up (works sometimes, goes away then runs fine etc.)that would be a wiring issue. Bad ground is the most common problem. Doesnt change the timing.

I'm at a loss...I'm getting good spark but can't find an issue..guess I'll check all wires again..but damnnnn...gotta be something simple I'm missing.. hopefull y

Set your timing. Rev the motor and see if it advances properly. And goes back when it returns to idle. Tighten down distributor. Your problem is elsewhere.

Dont get discouraged. Your not pulling the front of the motor. Thats a good thing.

I drove it was fine shut off and she has been running off ..I tried to reset timing with distributor but had to raise idle high and it wasnt right with throttle response.. timing is advancing but not sure why all of a sudden the mark jumped from being on to being few inches from balancer mark??

Reset timing and ran ok in driveway still not 100%..went for a ride and has a low to mid end stumble and and some deceleration pop..also timing moved a few degrees..so after cool down I'll recheck distributor can't touch it now ...and also started missing real bad at end like spark was being lost...I wiggled all wires and nothing seems to make it run funny..my girl is messing with me..hope I just didn't tighten distributor enough and she moved ..but I thought she was tight enough...I couldn't move it when I grabbed it with the rag..but was to hot to stay in their

The part of thinking I was losing spark after I got on her and was going down the block is making me think either a part or a wire somewhere...gonna put new pieces I got on tomorrow and hope for the best..

You can lose spark because of carbon tracking. Look for lines, very light pencil lines. Look for them in direct sunlight. Or,run it in the darkest place you can. And look for arcing.

Ok I needed a better understanding of how and where I should be..got it running pretty nice throttle response..it seems to want to run on the atdc marks tho... looking at motor tdc mark on top little under 10mark.thought btdc degree advance would be on the bottom half of the hash marks on motor..uunless I'm reading it wrong.getting a new timing light tomorrow..

Indicated timing as shown by the light would at idle read let's say 10°. As timing advances the light moves away from zero. Now that's a standard light, correct? A dial back light I have never used. Before you buy another light compare with a borrowed one. Yours is probably working just fine. I been using the same craftsman light for well over 30 years.

Well plug on bottom of light won't stay in..I was brain farting last night..to advance it I turn the distributor counter clockwise..and since the motor is spinning clockwise the top half of the hash marks are advance not retard.....it's really frustrating that my brain is fukt....thanks again guys for baring with my forgetting simple things..umm like oh ya it fires once for every two strokes......I'm probably more frustrated with myself than you guys get at me for asking questions I first knew and learned over 20 yrs ago

It's jumping around to much..I'm getting new distributor tomorrow to much play in old distributor and pickup..the kit is 150
Well the instructions are calling for 5' of initial advance..but all I've been reading is like 10' ..guess I'll try it how it says and adjust accordingly..and it didn't say what full advance should read..is it like 35' full advance

With vacuum advance total timing can be 50°. What distributor did you get? 5-10° is a safe starting point.

Ok rewired front harness . Complete ignition and charging...new module ,ballist ,coil, distributor,wires..fired right up then started to rain didn't have time to put a timing light on it but on installation distributor I rotated engine counter clockwise to 7' adv.then set distributor to number one pickup and ran it ...had few pops on the first revs and didn't want to idle. That means it needs more advance right ...before I rechk distributor I'll run it if rain stops and see exactly how it runs because like I said I only ran for 2 min

Ok got it way close..wide open seems ok but bottom end can't seem to get right.. getting awesome throttle response In Drive way ..tiny hesitation on quick hit low end...I'm still at almost 37 full and 17 initial..I having areal hard time finding the sweet spot and seems to be worse with vacuum advance...
