Some of us here in NJ are having a Discussion, on when to change your oil for the Winter.
Is it best to change the oil with @600 miles on it before storing it for the winter? Or wait and change it fresh for the new season? Any opinions on this?

I wouldn't change it till I got 3-40

00 miles on it. Why would someone throw out good oil at $6 a QT.

Many will argue but I change my engine oil once when I get the joys out in the spring. Has worked for many years. But I don't drive a lot of miles. Just buy good oil and you'll be OK.

Run it during the off season?
Should if you could.
Today’s oil is far superior than what it was 20 years ago. 600 miles is nothing.
My buddy changes his oil every 3 years, and still its under mileage. He runs them during the winter, on mild days and warms them up.

neighbor with 69 charger says he has not changed it in 8 years.!. I would have to have 2-3 years and/or 3000 miles to change mine...anything else is a waste of $ IMO

I'm interested to know why anyone "thinks' it makes a difference either way. Other than wasting money, that is.

My theory has been to change it before I store it so all the additives in the oil are at the max since it's stored for months. A good way to find out if your current procedure makes sense is do an oil analysis to see if you should be changing it more often. Vintage engines don't run as clean as the newer ones.

My fair weather cars are stored from mid-October thru mid-April. They don’t get started at all during that time and maybe get 500 miles / year put on them.

I change the oil about every 4 years and use whatever oil I pick up on sale. No oil related issues.

there probably is an argument for having clean oil in all the nooks and crannies over a prolonged storage time vs. oil with a lot of acid and corroding crud in your motor..if you're gonna change, Fall seems like the time. (you wouldn't want crud in YOUR cranny all winter long.. :) )

Just changed mine $45 is cheap insurance on a $5K engine investment. It will sit in the garage till May.

I don’t use any fogging oil....
