Before buying a car, bill of sale only, how can I verify it's not stolen beforehand?

Also......looking at a 1967 Plymouth GTX. What's it worth???

Factory 440 car, but no motor or trans. All glass is in tact, rear axle, tires and wheels

In fantastic condition. Sat inside a garage, on concrete for 40 years, very very minimal rust.

Also, no interior.........what would I expect to pay or what's the car worth in this condition?

Can you take the VIN to DMV to see if it is clear? The GTX will never be a matching numbers car. Value is less. Out here in Cal. these things are gold plated, or it would seem. I'm guessing value at about 5K.

I don't understand- a VIN is always "valid", it is the VIN! Maybe you need to go down and talk to a real person.

Well that is a shame...might have to take the VIN to the DMV, as Murray suggested...

Up to 1980 there was no standard for VIN's, in 1981 the format was standardized.
Why they can't look it up either way I have no idea but the online decoders see it as giberish

Any police department will run a VIN for you. I don't think the DMV will help but you never know till you ask.

Wrong, only when doing a VIN check with the vehicle on scene, with title and purchase paperwork

Wrong.... I have had many a VIN checked out at our police department. Where did you come up with that?

Now the Ohio State Police will want to see the car, but the local Police WILL run the VIN.

No local PD will run the VIN without a reason or justification

Won't happen, I know this

OK if you say so. I've done it many times. I have never had a problem like that so carry on.

Every state is different. There is no universal answer. He needs to do some investigating in Indiana. California and Ohio rules don't apply here. Is Indiana a bill of sale state?
Last car I bought was from Nebraska, a bill of sale state, and I sweated bullets until I actually had my new Ohio title in hand because Ohio is VERY anal about this stuff.

Another thought.....give the VIN to your insurance agent to get a Quote. Maybe something would pop up?

If you have a friend that works at a car dealership, they should be able to run vin, my sister -in-law, works at a dodge dealership and she ran the vin on a car for me, the DMV wanted to know why, she said its an out of state car and we are taking it in on trade, not only did she get town and city of last owner, even got licence plate number and last date titled.

I'd only buy a "bill of sale only" car in a state that doesn't title cars over a certain age.

A 67 absolutely can be a matching numbers car with a different engine than it was originally built with.

...because there aren't any numbers to match. "Simply" find a correctly dated 440.

You need to check your local laws, every state has their own rules. It all starts with a call to the local DMV.

local pd in indiana will run vin no problem. city charges $5 dollar fee. I personally done it several times. Getting a title for vehicle here without one can be a nightmare. Need bill of sale, noterized afidavid of ownership, police vin check.ect.. ect.. dozen trips to dmv. but can be done. I wouldnt buy it unless I know the seller. Price is all about condition minimal rust 4-15k

Call your insurance company tell them you want to buy the car. They should run the vin for free.

If the car has been off the road and in storage for the past 30 years, the VIN will not even come up in any computer. Running the Vin will tell you nothing unless it was recently reported stolen, and by recently I mean in the last 20 years.

As for value, without pics and a better description of what’s left and the condition of the hard to find parts like the tail panel trim, gas cap assembly, wheel lip mouldings and other hard to find parts, I would put the value at about $3-5k. The interior stuff will be hard to find, although I can get a number of 67 440 HP motors at my honey hole, if you’re in Michigan or nearby!

Whatever the outcome you choose, make sure you can indeed get a title, before you hand out the cash. Soo many horror stories I have read here, and other forums as well...... good luck with your endeavors......
Shoot some pics, we would love to see them, it would give us the chance to help set a value on the GTX.

I saw the car in person today......no rust, anywhere

The title was burned in a fire at Mopar City

No interior, at all......dash is pretty complete....and visors are there, along with steering wheel

Front disk, 440 car and all the glass is good

Bill of sale only

No seats, console? No rust is a huge plus. Assuming an automatic w/ 8 3/4". Am upping my estimate to 10-15K. Good luck.
