spiral staircase for loft

-
Looks great!

Maybe consider putting slats on the bottom to box it in and hide the framing?

Looks real good for someone who's not working with wood on a regular basis!

I was planning on drywalling the bottom, but I like the idea of slats a lot better (I hate drywalling)

I am pretty excited with how it's going

Here is a shot of the little girl breaking it in
(She even asked if she could sleep up there...i told her not until the stairs are on)

No pics, but a little progress
I installed an old bathroom light up there and wired it into a switch right by your hand as you come of the stairs

I also put in a few outlets (one inside, one outside)
And I only zapped myself once

I know you guys are all anxiously awaiting updates, so here is one
I got the bottom slatted in (great idea Cope)
I only need to cut one more piece but I ran out of time

Chances are tomorrow I will finish the inside of the railings and then i can start shopping for carpet

No problem, I also hate drywall..... and will go out of my way to avoid having ANYTHING to do with it.....

:)

The way it portrudes out, I think it actually looks good...and to prove it, here is the pic I forgot to upload

The only bummer is you didn't leave the front slats long enough to cover the bottom slats. I know your plan wasn't to go this route so it's no surprise but that's my only critique so far.

I think you've done a hell of a job from where this thread started. Considering most folks input was, dont do it.....

Thanks
I'm pretty pleased with it
I'll toss a little trim piece over it, and no one will be able to tell they aren't all perfect

It's funny, I think about a half a dozen times during my marriage I've had a plan for s something and the wife was not fully on board with it
Only to say "wow, that came out way nicer then I expected"
I got a good feeling that's how this project is going to end

You can dam near hide anything with trim. It's like the bondo of the carpentry world!
(Only not as ghetto)

You got a win, win right there. Made the kids happy AND the wifey happy. Don't get better than that!

Final update for a while since we will be heading out of town tomorrow

I got most of the slats on
As you can tell I'm missing a few on the right hand side, that is because once the stairs are in, I will cap them into that railing and once that is done, I'll finish those slats to hide the screws

If you look closely you can see our family portrait sitting there, my little girl had asked me if she could put it up there

Getting there
I was at the store this morning discussing underlayment with the salesperson
I told him it didn't need the stain barrier on there since the kids aren't allowed to eat up there anyway
Then my wife pipes up and says "she was eating up there yesterday"
So, we got the stain barrier

I need to pick up some trim, and some smaller staples for the base of the stairs, but all that is left (carpet wise) is the top of the base, and the steps

The base will be the same purple as the loft, the steps will alternate between pink and purple

Got some trim put up
I just need a few more pieces of trim around the outside, slap the stairs on and were done

I pried some of the carpet off the steps and found this (I will remove this too, but I kinda like the way it looks)

Are you sure your not a carpenter? Cuz that looks pretty dam good!

I gotta say I'm happy to have helped and it makes me kinda proud to see it all come together.

Great job man!

Thanks man
It is far from perfect, but I'm happy with it
One of the mistakes I made was put the electrical outlet in the wall without knowing how high my trim was going to be, so now I need to trim the cover plate

After spending about 20 minutes trying to clean one of the steps off I decided to just cut new ones out of particle board, so that will be my goal for tomorrow

I can't wait to get this stair case done

i got the bottom trim on
i decided the edges looked plenty good, so i only ran trim around the very front edge

i also got the top trimmed in, as far as i could

if you remember, once the stairs go up the left hand railing will get a cap that connects to the post of the stairs
once that part is in, i can finish up the slats and the trim on that side

Oh, I also found a smaller faceplate for the outlet that actually fits without trimming it...that was exciting

Finished off the box that the stairs will sit one
Once the stairs are done, I can put the box in place, anchor it to the ground, and put the top on

I also finished up the steps, not completely pleased with them, but good enough

I cut them out of 7/16 particle board because I did not feel like going through the trouble of cleaning the staples out off the old steps

(Steps will rotate pink-purple-pink)

I know you guys are all anxiously waiting to see this completed (I know I am) so let me fill you in on where we stand
The stairs need to be painted, and after drywall, paint is my weakness
There's a lady in our church who actually enjoys painting so I contracted her to do this
It took a while to get our schedules to line up, but she is coming over tomorrow to paint it

Then I can install the stairs and put on the finishing touches
The steps are carpeted and ready to go on, and I need a few trim pieces I can't install until after the stairs are in place

Gentlemen...the stairs are in
It took 5 of us really only a few minutes to get her corkscrewed through the window (2 guys in the bed of a pickup truck lifting, 2 guys inside the house hauling and and guy in the loft guiding)

Really, all that is left now is a cap from the centerpost of the stairs to the railing, a few trim pieces and perhaps a new light fixture
(And some touch up on the paint where we scraped it coming in the house)

What impressed me the most is how little room these stairs actually take up

As you can tell in post #67 I handy fully decided how to trim off the carpet on the opening...turned out I got the height of the box perfect that the mounting bracket for the stair acts as the trim piece

just thought I'd let you all know, the little girl is sleeping up there tonite, together with a friend...awesome place for a "sleepover"

Very cool ! Your daughter is always going to remember the " special place" that " her dad built for her" . Kudos!

thanks

i always try to make sure that one feels special, with her being the middle one, im always afraid she tends to get overlooked
