I am finishing up on the assembly of my 408 W2 Stroker motor and want to have it dynoed before install.
This will be my first engine dyno and I want to be prepared.... What should I expect and how should I prepare.

Whose dyno are you using?
I would follow his recommendations

But in short, you want to prime the oil pump and get the timing ready to fire right away
Then you want to have cooling ready, but your dyno guy should have all of that

Dynoing my motor this week-so, am not providing my new chrome v/covers or my restoration ignition wires. Am preparing for a little rough treatment, mounting to the dyno, coming off the dyno, putting it in the back of my truck. Will bring the motor home and detail it then. Will only provide what is needed to dyno it.

Its a local guy that I was referred to. I will have a conversation with him prior .
I am looking for things that might not be obvious from guys that have dynoed motors before. I hope to try 2 manifolds back to back .... A Victor vs M1 Dual plane W2s.

I am really hoping it doesnt throw a rod or leak like a seive...lol

Don't expect magazine numbers.

You are there to properly break it in in a controlled environment.

You are there to have it tuned perfectly before it goes into the vehicle.

Usually they give you 4 hours for around 500$. I would plan on bringing parts to alter timing curve, any other intakes, carbs, headers you want to try. I would bring all of your engine specs, especially lash specs and have the lash set when you get there. Bring a change of oil. Bring the fuel you want it to run on.

Get a hot reading on the lash.

not doing this for bragging rights.. just as Rocco said... to get it tuned and sorted out before installing. Please dont let it leak....urgh !
I am quite sure it will produce more HP than I need or can use.
Of course if it ends up around the 600 mark ( no clue really) I will be the first to post it...haha..

Xtra oil
Plugs
Jets & Power valves
Gaskets for intake change
Xtra carb

Prelube engine
set lash cold
Set timing to 5* - 10*

Pray....

Do you need to supply the gas? I did, and I should have brought an extra 5 gallons, we ran out.

They should have most of what you need but its always good to bring what you can just in case.

This will be a pump gas motor but I will bring an extra 5 just in case.
How do they run the various ignition systems ?

I took race gas and pump 93, extra plugs and my Holley carb parts, jets, bleeds, IFR, tranfer slot restrictors, gaskets and a super sucker spacer. I took the engine unpainted, after the dyno session it was cleaned up and painted.
We primed mine, started it and set the timing and warmed it up and ran the valves then started making pulls. I have to admit I had a lump in my throat on the first pull, he pulled it to 7200.

And ?
what did it make at 7200 ?

So I stopped by the machine shop and chatted ... they have been building engines privately for a long time but just went public. WOW ! everything is new and state of the art ! By far the most complete and modern shop I have seen locally. They are building stuff way over my head. Nice to know there is someplace to do whatever needs done locally.

Please Please Please, post the results of the intake swap. I’m putting together a similar combo with the W2 dual plane and contemplating if I should step up to a large plenum single like the Victor.

After some tuning and the spacer it made 703 at 6750 and 624 foot pounds of torque at 5100. The pump 93 made 30 hp more than the 98 race gas and the PCV valve was worth 3 hp on the last pull. A dyno is a tool just like a tire gauge, the numbers from your gauge may not match mine but both measure the changes made.

Amazing what works and what doesn’t isn’t it.

Exactly!

@mdaird looking forward to your results.

I always love tuning into this stuff! I know I'll never be able to afford it.
My-2... Save your money. Break the motor in yourself and Xerox somebody's Dyno sheet to show people and like you said have more than enough horsepower than you need anyways.

The 434 is the only engine I've had on a dyno, going forward any engine that is going to make some steam will be put on a dyno too. There is much to be learned and you can actually see what if any difference changes make. It would take many trips to the drag strip to learn what I learned about this engine in a few hours. For me it was money well spent, your mileage may vary.

Honestly that's exactly what I had in mind when I built the motor! Many trips to the dragstrip! LOL

You don't get it, but I understand. I probably wouldn't take a 11.50 engine to a dyno either.
