How much does a hood scoop actually help?

It's about getting the intake above the stagnant boundary air layer.

And it's about getting the carb out of the oven
I upjetted a full size, front and rear, after cutting the hole, and sealing the carb to the underside. A full size; isn't that like 2000ft ? Anyway, that's what sucking hot underhood air cost me;

Do like the 6 pack does. A drain on each side. I’ll have to check the size of the tubes that are in the AAR style set up I am doing but I think there generous in size, like a 1/2 inch.

I could but I don't know if that is really necessary since it only has ever gotten a few drops in it, but ya never know.:D
Thanks

Well, I see your point but figured more out going water capability would be better than not. And your initial drain size mention.

Any memory of a source on this? It would be interesting reading.
Thanks!

The early hemi scoops were very flat, low,big area and hood hugging , they did force a little air in, we ran one for yrs. We ended up w/ a sealed snorkel because it was supposed to be the hot ticket, guess what no improvement over the 64-67 scoop !
I have a friend that has a low 9 second vega, humongous prostock type scoop, and hasn`t shown to gain anything sealed or unsealed, go figure !
I do have my 6 pack scoop sealed , (cold air). I used an old pizza pan, cut round and sealed w/ the moroso foam, to the bottom of the hood. I do have vents in the hood to let engine heat out also.
YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY!

I didn't bother with a scoop for my streeter, which seldom sees over 65mph. But I bought a nice oval aluminum air cleaner housing and mounted it on top of the hood, between the inserts.

I had to run a scoop because the throttle body wouldn`t clear, even w/ a drop base air cleaner.
I didn`t really want to, much like the roll cage, but needed the scoop, and the cage to stop the body from twisting . We twisted a 67 hemi belvedere body back in the day.

On the street? Whoa! That's waaay outta my league

I’m not out for the last 1% on my street car. But it held a lot of heat under the hood. Car never overheated, but it made riding it toasty. Put it in a friends garage and he commented how it heated up the garage. I made the twin scoops functional, just open into the engine compartment and I bet it lowered the under hood temps 30 degrees or more. Don’t know it it’s pushing air through or allowing it to be sucked out but it was a huge difference

3 to 4 tenths, on this. It was sealed.

that is a bunch for that type scoop !
I read a post on here a good while back, that the guy said those scoops were a joke, and wouldn`t pull any air at all. I had to add an extra hood pin in the back because it was lifting the hood at 128-130 in the 1/4. I think the front design of the car has a big big effect on it . .

Cooler air charge is about the only benefit from a stockish scoop. In order to get ram air effect the scoop needs to be up in the air stream, a 6 pack scoop is not tall enough from my research. I would seal the cleaner to the underside of the hood.

Here is my solution to seal it. I ordered an 18" aluminum baking pan, cut the center out, riveted the cleaner base to the pan. Added a push-on bulb seal to the rim. Added a Wix 4" tall filter. Better than sucking in hot air.
