Mopar Dufuses in the 80s

-
love the 71 Charger - still miss mine. And will probably own another one - some day

Here is my '71 SE with a gutted non-functional air grabber hood - which was top banana yellow off a super bee - sanded and rattle canned primer black. At freeway speeds the scoop would pop up a 1/2 inch- the best the coat hanger could do to hold it in place

PS - if you look close enough on this old photo - I am on my way to prom - - so cool

Wow this threads got legs. I was out an about today. Took a 2 hour trip up to to Whichita Falls to visit w another Fabo member and buy a V8 K frame and lower control arms from him. He tossed in a PS lower column adaptor and a good condition used windshield. Anyways i was up there visiting, for a few hours, got back popped open fabo, and damn we are up to 5 pages on this.

Keep it rockin. I did the Dufus **** too had the edelbrock lynx air cleaner with the foam element, the cal custom T handle valve cover hold downs, blue anodized rocket valve covers so yeah i did the dufus **** too. Never hacked out my thumbwheel radios on either my 68 or my 69 charger, i mounted my aftermarket radio under the dash. Had a big red dry chem fire extinguisher mounted under the dash too.

So it's came full circle there was three fingers pointing back at you LOL

The difference is i have learned a lot over the years and prefer mods that appear stock but arent. Like the aluminum headed 408 i am in the process of building. "Block headed to machine shop next week" will appear like a 273 non commando right down to everything being painted commando red, and stock valve covers. Body colored 15" steelies w poverty caps to hide cordoba big brakes, shift light hidden in the brake light in the dash instead of an aftermarket tachometer. Aluminum radiator painted black to appear stock. You know, stuff like that. I guess i am into more subtle mods now. Talk softly and carry a baseball bat. LOL

Getting .. OLD .. sucks !!! .. except for .. MEMORIES !!!

I installed the tiniest steering wheel I have ever seen, black diamond tuck upholstery (done up in Tijuana for $150--everything dash, door panels, seats, etc.) I also had air shocks for awhile. This was on the '63 Grand Prix I purchased for $100.00. Painted it blue (Petty Blue-not sure?) with gold pearl. Installed an aluminum intake on the 389--don't remember now if I had swapped in a 421--I'm losing it! I drove the Pontiac to community college auto shop classes where I was building my '65 Valiant bracket racer. This is circa '73-'78.

"Picked-up" (AKA met for the first time) my favorite girlfriend one night cruising Main Street in front of Salinas High School in the Pontiac. She sat on the console straddling the automatic gear shift while a buddy of mine sat in the co-pilot's chair. On the AM radio Gary Wright was singing "My Love Is Alive" and Heart was singing "Crazy on You." ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZqItCGY3Ns

How did my old 63 GP end up there from Ill. that 389 was a great engine, blue buckets with the vacuum gage on the center console, love it when I had mine at the age of 15

The best thing about this thread from what I'm seeing, is when we were young, we all did goofy and bizarre things. Man, we were all the same back then!! If any of us saw any of the cars pictured here pass by we would have thought they were the coolest! We could have all been friends back in the day, lol!

For us old enough, our old cars now days give us memories of good times in the past and not so good times too. BUT memories can't be taken from us. The younger generation is making memories today!!! Use your time wisely!!!!!! Be dufuse if you like! , and mopar or no car!!

65Val, in post #87 I'd take that Plymouth today ! Great look and stance !

Moparmandan.Your post #93 you mentioned Black Jack Headers, Had those on my Duster back in 1974. $48 a set new,and looked like a can of worms under the car.

Not me mine says bad *** right out of the gate. People look at my car and don't even try it. No one wants to race ever. No one ever even thinks about trying it.
I always hope someone will try it! But no one does:(

Yeah and none of us had a "stock" car? We always did a bunch of stuff to make it cool? I don't know about you guys but that was a total purpose of buying this car and it's special-purpose LOL dual quad tunnel ram! Pistol grip 4 Speed! Dana 60 with a spool! Never wanted that when I was a kid...

I sure wish I knew how to navigate my profile better dammit! I want to add "Mopar doofus!" AND PROUD OF IT!

that pic of the white duster looks similar to a bronze '74 I bought off of a credit union repo lot in 76. I paid $750. PO had installed a B or E-body 8-3/4 rear axle, and instead of moving the spring perches in appropriately, installed longer shackles which were not vertical, but close to a 45 degree angle, which I found had cracked the rear frame rails. It also had air shocks at max pressure, which I found later to have cracked the upper shock mounts on the trunk floor/rear kick'up area. the front end was lowered until the LCA bumpers were contacting the frame rails at rest, which cracked the UCA mounting ears on the frame rails. I can't remember if it had headers, but I do remember PO had split lengthwise some big galvanized pipes, and by rolling the split end into a taper had hammered them into the header collectors/ crossover and run the outlet pipes out the side ala trans am racer style. The entire A/C compressor, brackets, and hoses were in the trunk. Too much weight on the front end, might as well add it over the rear tires, I guess. That's the high (low) lights. I managed to fix all that and drove it around for several years, when mercifully I was hit broadside by a VW 411/2 , driven by a Patricia Moneymaker(swear to God), who claimed she was driving 15mph. The impact on the right side a-pillar area, snapped the right strut rod, and split the floor pan weld all the way from the RT a-pillar to the headlight dimmer hole on the LT side, and drove my car across the intresection and up over the curb and on to the planting strip. Anyway that was the end of that poor Dustpan.
