Hello,

Just finishing up my 30x30 shop. 12 foot ceilings. Wondering how many 4 foot led shop lights I should install (I'd like it bright in there of course). Also looking for recommendations on brand or site for led shop lights (lots on amazon, ebay etc), but I don't mind spending a few bucks now so I'm not replacing cheap lights which don't work properly after 3 or 4 years.

Thanks for the help. .

i got 48 inch led shop lights at sams. just make sure they come with chains to hang with. some of them had some weird plastic things to hang by. its whatever comes of the boat from china though i guess. i think i paid 25 bucks for each light and they are 2500 lumens each.

i dont shop at sams anymore btw. i bought tires there and the morons in the garage lifted my van by the body seams and now the doors wont open and shut right. totaled my vehicle basically. when i tried to get them to make it right they called the cops on me.

At the machine shop where I work we have been slowly replacing all of our old fluorescent 8ft T8 style shop lights with multiple FEIT Electric brand 4 ft led shop lights that the boss has been buying from Costco. It took about a day to get used to the light that comes out of the light and the slight glare it produces on the metal but we definitely have more light now. The machines that had one 8 foot light dedicated to it only need one 4 ft light now. And in areas where we had two 8 ft shop lights to cover larger areas, we now only need three 4 ft lights positioned a little differently. The best part is that they are able to be "piggybacked" to one another (connect a string of lights together) making them easier to hook up. The first ones only went up about a year or so ago so I can't talk about how long they will last, but they sure do look good. I would recommend checking the mounting points as el5dart said earlier, we weren't too happy about ours because it came with metal cables that mounted into plastic holes so we mounted directly to the metal housing which was pretty easy. Another thing I've noticed is some have chains that come down to turn them off and on, and others have motion detectors so they can turn off automatically, you should make a choice on which style you want.

For a shop that size, I'd shoot for at least 25,000 lumens of LED lighting for a nice bright workspace. More if the walls or floor are dark colors.

Built a garage last summer and my electrician installed two 2'x2' Led's. They are so bright that he could have only put one in the garage and it would have worked great. 28x32 garage. Not my garage but a clients.
They were 400 each as I recall. Well worth the money. Look for the high end lights, they are well worth it. When I see my sparky in the next week I'll ask him what brand they were.

I’ve been replacing my 8ft flouros in the shop with 18,000 Lumen high bay 2’x1.5’ lights from home depot. They run 100$/piece and totally worth it. Ill take a pic shortly

I would also recommend adding one of these to the lighting, near where you are most of the time. I love not having to fiddle with a radio, just turn on pandora, and go to work.

My friend Richard (who helped build my 7-foot oven years ago) said you can put LED bulbs into existing 8-foot fixtures simply by bypassing the ballast. Anyone tried this???

Yes, I have in 4ft fixtures. I bought the 4 ft led tubes from Amazon, I'll see if I can find the link. I then found a YouTube video.showing you how to remove the ballast and rewire the fixture. It's super easy and more cost effective than buying the led shop lights even from Costco.

I've redone a bunch of 8 foot fixtures (single pin bulbs). It's called a double ended bypass. Simply hook all the wires on one end of the fixture to the 'hot' supply wire and all the wires on the other end of the fixture to the 'neutral' supply wire.. Easy peasy. I used 6000K LEDs and they are nice and bright in a warehouse with 20' ceilings.

On the 2 pin style fixtures, they call for a single end bypass. Connect the 'hot' to the left side of the tombstones

on one end and the 'neutral' to the right side of the tombstones. The tombstones on the opposite end do NOT get wired (they must be non-shunted tho). A little more complicated sounding but still easy to do.

X2 on the Feit brand 4' fixtures from Costco. My shop is 30x40, but it has an internal room 10' wide all down one side, leaving a 20x40 work space. I put in nine of the lights, and it made a HUGE difference. I got the lights on sale, I think about $30 each. They are totally worth it.

40 LEDs in 4 rows of 10. I have forgotten total wattage. Work GREAT in the cold and provide good lumens from a standard base. I have a 30x48 shop with 3 of these on the 16 foot cielings. Home Depot ~ $30.00 each if I remember correctly.
