When I was 15 years old, I was in a 50 mph offset head-on collision (driver side to driver side) with a ‘70 Malibu that ran a red light while riding in the front passenger seat of my friends ‘66 Mustang. I wasn’t wearing a seat belt and put my left knee through an underdash 8 track player, wrapping it in around my knee in an arc. My forehead hit the windshield and my left temple broke off the rear view mirror. The top of my head hit the top of the windshield frame which was the only reason I wasn’t ejected through the glass.
Thankfully, I was a football player and my neck was about as wide as my head so I was able to resist the impact somewhat. I had a severe concussion and my knee was badly bruised...but I went home from the ER to recuperate. The doctors were amazed that I had survived the collision. Both cars were completely totaled.
Every time someone mentions an 8 track player, it comes back in a vividly intense wave of memory. I almost died that day.
Ever since then, I can’t even back down my driveway without my seat belt on.
