727 transmissions are so complex

The gauze filter in a Torqueflite is so great that you can allow all kinds of trash in one as long as you keep it clean around the valve body and governor. The old Fords with screens instead of filters were the ones that required the utmost cleanliness. They even had access holes in the tailshaft housing and recommended removing the governor every 20k for cleaning. I think the biggest fear inducer around the TF is the seal that goes around the outside of the pump; which causes diddiculty for the pump to be pulled out and pushed back in. I always leave it off until I get my end play where I want it.

I tend to agree.....as long as the valve body is super perfect clean, you don't have to worry too much. ....to a point.

To clean them I disassemble them and take everything to my local machine shop. For $40 he hot tanks everything in non caustic solution and everything comes back looking brand spanking new (as long as it wasn't worn out). IMO it's not worth 2 plus hrs of hand scrubbing everything up for for what he charges me

I have been studying the books from Munroe and Hand. The information is so overwhelming that I hesitate to begin an overhaul or rebuild.

Look inside a Ford FMX trans. The valve body looks like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.

Me and my buddy rebuilt an FMX trans once while drinking. The next morning we noticed several parts left on the bench. Had to pull the whole thing apart again but it did end up running 11's on many runs with nitrous. Never had a single problem with that trans but daaaaamn they are heavy!

I had a Ford-o-matic (Daddy of the FMX) in my '57 Fairlane 500. Had 2 speed ranges but 3 speeds? You put it in L and took off, then you shifted to D and it would shift into second, then you put it back in low to hold 2nd and then finally back to D for 3rd gear. Ditched it for a C4 behind a 351C which promptly broke an input shell.

Built the FMX Cruise O Matic in my 72 Ranchero with a 351 Cleveland added a shift kit. This was back in 1974. Turned out real well.
