OK. I picked up a running 440 with a 727 attached, however it has a short tail housing with a small brake drum connected to it. Here is my conundrum.

Can I switch out the tail shaft section to convert it to a normal (if there is such a thing) 727?
If so, what specifically do I need to do?
If not, I am guessing junk it?
thanks, FABO

Yes and No. You will need the tail shaft housing and the output shaft out of a similar year car 727 car trans. I've done it a few times in the past. You have to take it completely apart to change the output shaft.

OK, that was what I suspected from my research.
What I am not sure of is whether it matters if the 727 is a SB or BB.
I assume the tail housings are identical, while the main housing is specific to motor size/type.

Any output shaft from a similar year 727 will work. I think it is 70 and earlier and 71 and newer are the same.

You might need the front planetary that matches the longer output shaft if the splines are different. Also the larger later snout on the front of the output shaft won't fit into the earlier input shaft. And of course the pump has to match the forward drum.

Plus the direct drum bushing width has to match insofar as you can't put a wide bushing drum on a pump cut for the narrow one. Best bet is to get all the guts from the long tail trans just to make sure you have all compatible pieces. Oh, and not all 727 cases are compatible with all 727 valve bodies. On the passenger side, behind the accumulator, there was a change in the case casting. The wrong valve body won't cover the openings and some of the openings have a hole in the bottom that will bleed off pressure.
