Why did the exhaust pipe on the Ford Y-block V8 cross over in front of the engine?

The Ford had that crazy piston assisted power steering and the whole contraption was massive. Right where RRR says it was, so the pipe had to go forward.

Heck Corvette used that until?? very late, may still for all I know
