Okay, my nephews '66 valiant with a/c originally. So here is the issue. The heater core has been bypassed, assuming its a leaker and the reason it was bypassed. The heater core swap is straightforward, and the running of new hoses. My question is this there is two additional brass colored garden hoses sized fittings from the firewall. What are they? Do I need to plug them off to keep the heater core from leaking there. I'll add pics of it. Secondly what's the vacuum pump on the passenger side inner fender? Is it for a/c only or is it to operate the heater core? Again I'll add pics soon. Thanks.

pressure hose fittings for the AC lines from the compressor. not at all connected to the heater water

Sounds like the two brass fittings from the firewall are the AC lines from the evaporator under the dash. You don’t need to plug them but I would.
The long tube on the pass side inner fender is the AC dryer. If you aren’t using it you might be able to find someone to buy it.

I don't know of a vacuum "pump" on the right inner fender. A vacuum operated water cutoff valve had 2 vacuum lines and heater hoses attached to it. It stopped hot water from entering the heater core when a/c was in use. If it works, doesn't leak water or vacuum, leave it or delete it. If it's faulty delete it. Heat only builds didn't get such a valve. Water went through heater core at all times.
Some owners have placed a hand operated gate valve in this heater hose line ( even those without a/c ). This to keep the interior a little cooler in summer.

Thanks to all of you. I think now I have a good idea of what to do. Plug the two a/c tubes off. Delete the vacuum water cutoff as theres no plans ever to reinstall an a/c unit. Replace the heater core and run new hoses to the block and back to the core. And I guess while I am in there replace the thermostat.

Those vacuum operated heater control valves are hard to find, nobody makes them so you might want to sell it a help a fellow A body guy...

That's something that might I be able to do. It's the nephew's car, so it will be his choice. It may just be put on the shelf. But I will certainly encourage him to help a guy if he can and make some cash. As he is fresh out of school and not getting lots of hours at work.

That valve assembly is now reproduced. I forget were I saw it but it is out there. A used one could leak vacuum, water, or both. Another member/owner found that he couldn't buy just one part of that reproduction.
