DACCO 762 Torque Converter bolt alignment problem Slant six

Ok i am having a slight problem with my new torque converter that i purchased from autozone a month ago. I install the converter to the tranny and connected everything back. I then went and tried to install the torque converter bolts to the flexplate but for some reason they don't want to align properly for me to install the bolts.

I tried spinning the converter by hand as I watch the flexplate holes which I have it in a way that i can see 2 out of the 4 holes. I can only get 1 hole perfect but the 2nd one is off at a angle and the other 2 are 1/2 visible or not visible at all.

I was wondering if i needed a new flexplate for the aftermarket torque converter? I would hate to bring down the tranny again especially in the cold of December winter

Maybe its the cold weather that gotten to me or something is wrong. Im gonna try again when i have free time.

Take the darned thing back. Did you unbolt the flexplate? If it doesn't fit in one of 4 positions it's wrong.
 
no I didn't unbolt the flexplate... I should have but assumed it would fit :(

please don't tell me this man, that would suck bad
 
Sorry but there's only 1 of 4 ways to bolt it up. If neither of those work it is the wrong converter.
 
It only fits one way and there are 2 sizes 10 1/2", 11 1/2" so if you can get one bolt in the size is right but something is wrong. I take the flex plate off the crank, bolt it to the converter and paint one of the bolts, flex plate and converter so when I put it together I just line up the painted parts and it fits.

Use the same point on the flexplate. Put a bolt in. If the second hole isn't lined up, pull the bolt rotate the converter one hole and put a bolt in. Check the next hole if it isn't lined up rinse and repeat.

It will only line up one way, you have 4 combos to try.
 
Even the factory ones only fit in one position. Before you pull the trans out try it in all 4 spots. Put one bolt in, rotate to view each hole.if they don't line up pull the bolt out and spin T/C to the next hole install bolt there and rotate again till you get all 4 lined up. You might have to check all 4 positions before you get it right. Once I get it lined up I always give it a shot of spray paint on the plate and T/C so you know next time
 
that's what I did but for some reason I could get it to align. I DID got in 2 bolts but the other 2 were blocked off by the tabs of the torque converter. I gonna try again when i have the chance. maybe the cold got to me and I goofed up.

Hell i was researching if it was the flex-plate that i had to replace but looking around I don't think its the case. does anyone know what the bolt pattern size is on a stock slant six flex-plate? is it 10"?

You have to do it systematically. One hole at a time trying 4 times. If it doesn't fit after 4 tries, you got other issues.
 
again I should have taken the flex-plate off before doing anything.... the only thing i did was compare the converters side by side and took pictures which i found on my phone....

I don't know what you're doing measuring that converter. Anyway, that converter matches that flexplate if you can get even one bolt in. Your problem is that you aren't staying organized. Mark the first tab and flexplate hole you try; to make sure you don't try them again if they're wrong. Luck seldom works when the odds are 4 to 1 against you.
 
As it has been previously mentioned, there are two different sized flex plates for Mopars. I've attached a pdf file showing them. There is as mentioned only one way to mount the plate to the converter. The mounting pads shown are factory. The size isn't going to make any difference. Hope this information helps. The 762 is what they call a small diameter converter and was commonly used on the leaning tower of power and the 318.
