hello, so if a 65 valiant came factory fitted with a 4 speed what make was it? Is it a A833.

I think it has that trunion mount or bolt on with a glance front mounted driveshaft.

If it’s an A833 can it be used in later model A bodies and what changes have to be made to change the driveshaft to the typical slip in yolk style?

Thank you very much in advance for your replies!

Same. If I’m not mistaken any non ball and trunion driveshaft will work. Doesn’t matter if it’s an auto driveshaft or not. That’s for 63-66 Valiant a but I’m sure it will be the same on later models.

Bigger question is what engine are you running. 4spd had different bell housing styles for trucks and cars and different lengths. If going from a /6 to /6 I don’t think years matter at all

Not worried about the bell housing, I know the differences there, from 6 to 8. And early to late

What do you mean - same? Is the stock 4 speed in a 65 an A833? That’s my biggest question. I know early cars had an inland shifter which is obviously different from the hurst, so this is what makes me ask if the trans itself is the a833 or something different too...

Thanks

65 used the same 833 in the /6 and 273 cars. #2464262

Toolman Mike, Thank you. Wasn’t sure if some early trani’s We’re borg Warner or someother make or not. Good to confirm that it is an A833.

Now, what would I have to do to change how the drive shaft mounts to it. From the bolt on 65 style to a slip yolk style like found ona 72 or 73 340 car etc... as I would like to use this trans on newer 73-76 car.

Sorry if I should know this but I have no experience on the early bolt on style configuration. Is this indeed what they call a reunion mount? So I know how to refer to it in the future.

Thank you

No experience but I would think the tailhousing and the output shaft at least.

They call this style the ball and trunnion style for the B & T driveshaft that bolts to the flange on the output shaft of the trans. It is one stout transmission used behind everything from slants to a 426 Wedge and maybe even the Hemi in 64/65. The reason is the B & T 833 has an extra bearing in the tailshaft where other 833s don’t. The easiest way to use this transmission in a letter year car is to do the slip joint conversion to the driveshaft as described elsewhere here in FABO and on the early Barracuda forum. I will be using this conversion driveshaft in my 65 Dart wagon rather than the B & T driveshaft

Thanks!! Wouldn’t happened have that conversion bookmarked or a link?

Thanks alot

I tried to swap parts from a later A833 to a 64 A833 and I don't remember what issues there were but I wound up reverting to the flange and it's still there today. More involved than I expected.

I think some years used the lower 3x low gear, so if he swaps in a later gearbox it will likely be the higher geared low for v8s. Don't remember what all years they did that dance. Depending on the engine the OP uses, may or may not want one of the low ratios

Will Probably be used behind a 340. Learning much here.

I would not want the lower 3x low, then. They are weaker, as well as being wider spread than the other boxes

It would have came with a Hurst shifter in 64 and 65. It will be a different shifter mount plate than the 66 and up as the early A throws the shifter toward the ash tray for the round hole in the hump. It will have different shift rods for the early A I believe because of the position it mounts the shifter. It is cheaper to have a new shaft made with a bolt on slip yoke. I will have the lower3xx 1st gear. It takes a different speedo cable than the 66 and up trans as the 64 and 65 has the small adapter that is part of the cable unlike the larger one that is separate from the cable and threads on the adapter. In 66 they went to an Inland shifter. Any other questions just ask and if I know I will answer.

The 3.09 low has been taking everything my 367 can throw at it including a couple of 93 MPH Eighth mile runs. As said you just need a different tail and the large diameter mainshaft plus the appropriate rear bearing to marry them.
I like the 3.09 cuz it lets me run a 3.55 rear gear, takes off like it had 4.12s and still cruises at 65=2770 with 28s. The other ratios are about the same; HOWEVER, all the gears are different except IIRC the M/S lows are the same.
3.09-1.92-1.40-1.00 vs 2.66-1.91-1.39-1.00 ............... IIRC.

I have heard that some 2.66 boxes will not accept the 3.09 gearset without clearancing for the cluster. No big deal to solve with a die-grinder.
Your 340 will love that 3.09 box with up to 4.10s and 28s on the street. After that, first gear is a little short. I ran it with 4.30s and 27s for one summer, and that was too much for my 360; second gear came up awful quick. But, I did like the parade gear;600rpm =3.6mph.

I converted to a longshaft and moved my shifter back between the buckets, and up a lil, like a Viper. No more missed shifts since 2004.
