Whos running a 5.9L Magnum ?

-
I have a 2000 Durango 5.9 warranty take out complete assembly, and the driver's manifold is too close for comfort to the PS adjustment shaft.

The outlets also aim more towards the firewall, and the pass side hits the trans dipstick tube.

This is from trying just the manifolds in a 73 satellite.
Sounds like a bad deal in a A body.

Would you want to check the dates on these posts it started in 2011 ... man some posts are coming back from years ago !!!

As I understand it, magnum manifolds are cast different for different applications.

Jeep/Ram/Dakota, etc.

Even some differences year to year.

I have a stock 5.9 short block with the ported "R/T" heads from Mopar Performance. I'm running the roller cam from the 380HP motors with crosswind dual plane and FAST EZEFI 2 TBI. The car runs great considering I'm only running with 2.94 gears and a 3 speed.

If your running that bad boy on stock diameter tires, I agree and that FI helps a good bit.

I’d like to hear you say one day that you installed 3.90-4.10 gears with a decent tire size and let her rip!

3.90-4.10 are in the future along with an overdrive. I just can't justify doing it soon. My daughter is heading off to college. I have to pay for that first. I also have to get rid of the 8 1/4 rear end. I'll probably end up with an 8.8 out of the wrecking yard. 8 3/4s are just to expensive.

Nothing wrong with an 8.25 rear end

bought a 1999 5.9 engine...had an oil leaking plenum was removed from Durango...140k miles...bores look great...going to hone and put new bearing and rings in it...get a set of heads done for it and it is going into a 88 Dodge d250...hope to have short block back together by next weekend..probably going to have a stock hydraulic cam.

used a couple can of oven cleaner to clean pistons....man that stuff does a job...and then cleaned to block up too......

I’ll agree the Ford 8.8 is stronger but you do a disservice to the 8-1/4.

Let me ask, how much power are you making?

My car came with the 380hp create

Works pretty good a little soft under 2000 rpm. The gears is my main problem 2.94 with a 2800 stall. Plan on swapping to an airgap and Rhoads roller lifters to help bottom end. Plus add 3.55 - 4.36 not sure yet. See how the intake and lifters help first.

Do the gears and converter first. You’ll be much happier. Intake later, from r the icing on top .

Yep. I have the 360/380 hp motor backed by a Tremec 5 spd. Swapped the 3.55's for 4.10's, really woke her up.

Hey, I'm a Mopar guy. I really like the 8 1/4, but for the price to turn it into a sure grip, install gears and new brakes, I could have a stronger rear end for the same or less money. My car may be a cruiser right now, but I plan on doing some other things down the road. As far as hp goes, I really don't know. The combo is very similar to the HP380 but my heads are ported.

I will be useing a magnum 5.9 in my 91 Dakota pro Junk yard truck. That is if I ever get it all put back togeather. Lol working outside with no shop sucks. Lol my truck is pretty much a striped down frame with a cab mounted on it still. I to will be installing a Ford 8.8 in my truck. Mines coming from a Exploder and they are pretty much a bolt in deal. Just have to add spring perches and shock mounts.
Rusty around here you can get complete rearend for 150-200

Thats the plan now, I cancel the intake and lifter order, gonna grab a set of 4.30 gears.
Bought an Avenger RT to handle daily driving duties so the Valiant is free to be more street strip machine :)

Sooo.. leaving the cam / head / intake ? alone ? And converter? Semi innocent souls ( like myself ) would like to know.

For now, maybe over the winter port the heads/intake and add 1.7 roller rockers.
Don't see no point in taming the cam anymore and with 4.30 gears traction will be limited so probably won't need the torque of the airgap.

Agreement , it's gonna hammer. Trust me ,how I know...

Just like a race car.
Adding a higher stall converter for launch and into a higher rpm power band with a effect similar but not as hard as a race car.
Same as the gears.

But the converter and gears will match the future cam.

They do make good midrange torque.

Pretty awesome engine for a cam intake on a truck engine, with the 2.94 I need run in 2nd trough town so it dont lug , or do 40 mph in 1st then hammer it to feel its power. Ive been talk into grabbing a set of 4.56 :)

I run the 380 crate with tti headers, Bigs carb, M1 single plane, 4 speed, and 3.91s in my duster. Going from 3.23s and a demon carb with non functional vac. secondaries to the 3.91s and Bigs carb with mech. secondaries was a huge change. It's a blast to drive but I might drop some IMM EQ heads on it in the near future.

Well I finally got to move my Dakota into my girlfriends shop. Yea no more working on it only on nice days. Lol I finally got my DP carburetor installed last night. Getting ready to start working on getting the 8.8 built and installed. I am going to I stall 4.30 gears and a full spool. I am hoping my Dakota will run in the 10.80 in the 1/4 when I am done. After I get it running I am going to start saving money for a stroke engine for next year or a gen III Hemi engine. Lol
