Looking to get a 318 running that needs a mechanical pump. I have some parts in my rockauto shopping cart. The ones that will ship from the same location are a Spectra premium and an Airtex brand. How reliable are these. Its a stock 2bbl 318, nothing fancy. I can get the Carter pump but it will ship from elsewhere, and add another freight charge. Is Carter still good, or is it just a shell of itself selling rebranded Airtex pumps lol. Dont want to pay for the name if the quality is about the same on the other two that can ship from the same location as whats in my cart.

Thanks
Matt

The Spectra products are pretty good, can't really comment on the others. 65'

I got it. Thanks.
I've used Airtex numorous times. Haven't had any come-backs.

It shows the same 318 pump part numbers to work with a 340 which would be a 4bbl, so thats cool, i wont need to upgrade later on.

Hey RRR,

I defer to your opine.

If you need help deciding about spending $3.678924 and $4.9876 there's more to that than meets the eye . Buy the pump and if it doesn't work right send it back . WTF

Its not about saving money on the pump, its about avoiding Rockauto's multiple warehouse shipping BS.

To OP: Have you plugged the part # for the pump you want into Amazon? I've started looking up the parts I want on Rockauto's website, and then putting brand and part # into Amazon's search bar... I often find what I'm looking for for the same or slightly less money than Rockauto, and Amazon Prime usually gives me free shipping.

Oh yeah, I've installed hundreds of Airtex pumps, and generally had good luck with them. They are certainly better than GM's factory stuff.

Yup, its not about saving money on the pump. Its about bundling as much as possible in one shopping cart to save on shipping costs.

lol All of the "big box" parts store pumps are probably made by the same sweaty 12 year old in the same Chinese plant, so it doesn't really matter.

What was the standard temp thermostat used in a stocker 318. I see a 160° a 180° and a 195° on rock auto. I live in west Texas. It can top 105° in the summer. I was gravitating towards maybe a 180° one

Really depends on year. 60's and 70's used 160°-180° t-stats. Starting in the 80's nearly all manufacturers upped the temperature of t-stats to 195° in order to meet EPA emissions.
Living in West Texas and driving a non-emission car, I'd opt for 180° max.

Actually just about everything starting in 68 with Federal smog crap started using hotter stats, 190 'ish

This one might be more ideal for a 69 up rallye dash
