got a guy I met wants me to swap a camshaft break it in and install a offy four barrel set up with lokar cable. What's a good price for the work. I don't really know and don't have a clue. Hourly is not that great for me because I am a fast worker. So maybe a complete job price. Let me know thanks

350-400.00

You may have to remove the grill, but definitely the radiator, you will need a puller for the dampner and block of wood and 2lb sledge to put it back on.

Here is one way to get a rough estimate, call your local dealer ship and ask for flat rate quotes for the jobs, just ask for time.....cam swap, intake swap........what is their labor burden........done that more than once

Yeah I think the grill must be removed and bumper it's a 73 duster

Harmonic balancer installer. Pounding on the crank can take out the thrust bearings.

You'll need a header and free flowing exhaust plus a compression boost to make that of any significant value, So there goes another pile of cash. Then there's a TC involved, and probably gears in your future. Did he mention any of that. What's all that total up to? $2500?
And for what, 30/35hp?
Lessee 2500/30~$83 per horsepower.
Lessee what could I buy for $2500? I know, a junkyard Truck Magnum, with an overdrive 4 speed,a car oilpan, engine mount adapters, a used intake and 4bbl,plus new dual exhaust, and possibly a driveshaft. Oh heck you might as well take the Sure-grip 3.55s to 3.91s rear end too, while yur there.
Lessee 2500/145~$17 per horsepower.

My numbers might be off a tad, but you probably get the point.
Which is:
Make sure you get the WHOLE picture.

That's rearward thrust we're talking. It really doesn't hurt the thrust, but I respect your difference of opinion and/or technique... because it really doesnt matter in the end outcome in my mind, start that fire with a magnifying glass or that widdl'n stick.lol

He is working on someone else’s car.

Besides, if it is his prerogative to work up a slant 6, that’s his biz and he doesn’t need you preaching.
So stop acting like a Chevy guy.

Hourly is exactly what you want to charge. And add in materials..... Been down this road too many times and it works out better in the end. You are dealing with an old and aged car so IMO speed is not a priority. With that being said if this is in your garage without overhead then cut the labor to atleast half of what a local shop would charge....

My set price was always my wage at work making overtime and then add 20%. It was a good number and always seemed fair. Otherwise I was better off just punching the clock. But I am not greedy so mileage will vary....

Good luck,
JW

Im assuming you do quality work(first you get good, then you get fast)
Regardless of how long it takes, your time has value.
Hourly x 1/2 the nearest shop rate isnt out of the question.
My workshop rate is 1/2 of the city rate.Nissan in winnipeg is $139.95 per hour.
Worried about working too fast? Then take your time.

Book time for R&R cam is 10 hrs
for intake/exhaust is about 4 hrs (stock), and you will have issues with the intake exhaust matching, depending on what intake manifold is used.
Then you need to add time for rusty/broken fasteners
Install non stock linkage, including kickdown.
Fuel system/lines will need modifying
Is the carb going to need work, or major tweeking
I would not quote less than $700
I would rather quote too high, and be able to deliver for less (or lose the job), then quote too low and eat it.

dang i was thinking 200-250 lol, im just going to tell him 400.00, if he doesnt like it oh well he came to me, and now as iam a bit older and a little wiser i understand the value of knowledge and ones time.

Yup i told him that as well, he can just drop in a V8 for about the same cost but he said he wants to keep the slant six. and i told him as well it take alot more money to make a quicker slant six, then it would a small block.

You're giving it away at $400.00. But I don't know your situation either.....
