Want to put and aftermarket tach in a rallye dash

-
Wow! Very cool lights! Never even thought about that. I used LED replacement bulbs in mine, but it didn’t turn out that good. I need to pull my dash again anyway, as I did not know about the ivr in the fuel gage. Already bought the parts to make a solid state one. Thanks very much!!!!

The way i wired up my IVR i used red as 12V feed, yellow as the 5V output, and black as ground. I used ring terminals and pulled the 12v feed directly from the stud that fed it into the gage, and ditto with the 6V output from the fuel gage. When i converted to volts i enlarged the holes in the gage housing and fit plastic grommets, then used plastic spacers and washers to insulate it from ground shorts. I ran a red positive lead to the 12v feed stud at fuel gage, and a negative ground to the cluster housing. Later on i ditched the volt gage negative ground wire, and ditched the insulators on the negative side of the volt gage. I just stacked up steel washers and a nut to ground the negative volt gage stud directly to the gage housing. Doing it all this way eliminates extra wires everywhere and keeps nothing but stock plugs in the cluster.

I bought Motorola 7805 5v regulators. Should I have gotten a 7806 6 volt?

Hey 72Blu does the metal trim ring for the gage bezel cover up the clear plastic around the perimeter of the tach? If i went that route, i would need to get a green led bulb for the tach light so it all matches at night, and maybe cover up the SW logo.

What did you do with your repop tach you put in the 74 duster demon clone? If you decide to sell it, i may be interested. I have 2 of these cars, might want it for my 67. You never know.

Back to the original gist of the thread. How about this one from Stewart Warner. Perfect for 69 up rallye dashes. Prob similar in construction and design to 72 BluNblu s tach he modded. I may do the Stewart Warner tach, but go with this sidewinder one for sonnys 69. It would be more close to original for a 69.

3 3/8" is the way to go. You modify the gauge cup to fit the dash and you end up with the gauge taking up the entire space in the original hole, so you get a full size gauge and not some doubled up bezel with a little gauge in the middle.

I used this one Stewart Warner Heavy-Duty Series Tachometers 82171

I had to cut the gauge cup down some so it would be spaced back correctly and fit through the back of the gauge. Then I cut apart the original cup that was in the rallye dash to block the tach and epoxied it to the new gauge cup. End result bolts in just like a stock tach. It will protrude further back, but it should clear everything.

I still have to repaint the needle but that's easy enough. It'll look better in my actual dash, the one in the pictures is a parts dash and the lenses are kinda foggy.

The problem with that is the 3 3/8" gauges have a larger face than the original tachs did. I think you'd have a hard time matching up the sweep of the new tach to match the old face, the calibration would be hard to get right and if you didn't the tach wouldn't be accurate.

How did you remove the chrome bezel and lens from your SW tach? I am looking to buy a SW side winder 8K tacb. I am assuming its similar construction to yours.

I just modded my whole gauge set...I know it’s not what you’re looking at doing but just thought I post a picture of mine...I’m happy with the results so far!

Cool Tsully.

Wasnt that the old gage plastic from my 67 i sold you after i bought a repop? If so, you did an awesome job rehabbing it.

The metal ring on the original dash bezel actually covers the very outer edge of the hash marks on the new tach, so you can't see the plastic lighting ring at all. On mine there is still a gap between the end of the new tach's gauge cup (which I had to cut back some) and the bezel. Not sure if it would be enough to light it with the strip lighting, but you could probably cut it back further if you wanted to, there's still some space there. I just planned to leave the lighting ring in place and back light it too.

As for the repop tach that's in my car now, I don't think I'd feel good about selling it. It's not very accurate, and it intermittently goes haywire and skips all over the place. I've checked all the connections and wiring for it, it's the gauge. Which is a big part of why I bought and modified the SW gauge. I just haven't gotten around to installing it yet. Same problem as always, I drive the car too much to tear it down very often.

I would be a little concerned on that tach that the original bezel would hide the outer edge of the "rpm x1000" script. It'll be close, you might lose part of the outer "m" and "0" and part of the SW logo. If it would cover it completely that would be fine, but I think you'll end up with part of the script covered and the rest showing, might look weird.

On mine the "rpm x1000" script is pretty much completely covered by the original center cone of the tach lens. I touched up the very outer parts of the "r" and "0" with a dab of ink to fully hide them.

Just pry back the edge to release the crimping. Here are some more "in progress" pictures for everyone, I forgot I had these...

Saw someone liked my post, reminded me to post an updated picture with the tach now installed. Not the greatest picture but you get the idea.

Going to do that w kids car but gonna use the stewart warner sidewinder tach in his 69 cuda. The RPM x1000 is off to the side and shouldent be obliterated by the center bezel ornament.

That looks pretty good, but the stewart warner setup leaves it open to changing the bulb if needed. Plus the SW setup looks more OEM than the autometer.
