So, I have seen tons of questions about this, but I need some help. I have 1973 center link and idler arm for my 1971 Demon to help with oil pan clearance. The issue I have is the manual steering box is 2537349 which I think is a earlier small selector box. That being said, I believe Rock Auto is supposed to have an adapter arm that has the spline for the small selector but the top - down taper. There is a large 1.25", and 1.1", and 1.004" spline sizes under a 1973 Duster/Dart listings. Any ideas??

there is no 2 diff steering gear on mopar. you ck.who r u buying parts from. sorry but I 4 got ck and I do mean ck screw on top of both gears with a lock nut loosen lock nut tighten nut down snug. steer it a lot then do it again. point snug the center bolt down then stop . iffffff u amopar man will look in service manual it says same . point your steering gear is to loose …. it bindes or locks up. gears clash saying tooth to tooth bind. look atn top of sstr gear loosen nut take slotted screw and back out wiggle steering wheel thidgten screw do again on screw and lock nut not too tight then that is factory cure. but ur prob sonnds nuts. that does not happen with this gear. promise.

o I have done front end aligianments 4 ever .

There are two different boxes.... The both bolt in and physically fit. But there are two different output shaft diameters, typically know as "small" and "large" sector. I think the small sector was 1972 and older. The larger one appeared in 1973.

Steering Box Info

62-76 A-bodies, 62-72 B-bodies, and 70-74 E-bodies all used the same manual box. Most of these boxes used bushings throughout, however, the B-body V-8 units were built for more abuse and used bearings internally instead of the bushings.
All manual boxes used a small sector shaft with the exception of C-bodies and vans to 1988.

scroll down and you will see the correct moog part number for pittman arms for small sector for a 73 drag link.
the larger output shaft was on the power steering not the manual box....the first link will show pictures of the different manual boxes...the larger were in C bodies and Vans..

as long as the bolt goes through the complete a idler arm make sure its tight at frame it rotates in side its self. 67 had a bilt that held same arm to I say to K frame not bolted in k frame.

the 68 k frame wth the same but bolted better, steered 99% better. idler arm had support on top and bottom 67 did not no support on bottom..

the 383 and 440 where 68 67 68 69 a body had diff idler arms I have all and each. and cars also w 83/4 1 4spd 2 auto. as may say 67 abodyies on dler arms had a bolt 2 support top of idler arm no bottom support.

Exactly!

I have a 71 Cuda with P/S. It had the small sector shaft. I then swapped to a Steer and gear large sector box and had to change the pitman arm to the larger one. So there are definitely 2 different size sector shafts. Always measure to be sure someone hasn't change the box when ordering pitman arm.

All this talk about boxes and shafts is getting me excited.... :D

With POWER STEERING, This is correct. There is a small and large sector shaft. With Manual, they are all the same Pitman shaft size. The 2537349 is the roller bearing box.

Thanks all for the replies, but as I mentioned in the original question, if I have to use the earlier <72 manual steering small selector output shaft but the top down taper from the >73 center link, who knows if there is a combo small selector output shaft pitman arm with the top down taper? I have read there is one made or was one made.

It’s the same exact pitman arm that was on the manual steering box 73+ cars, because all the A/B/E body manual steering boxes had small sectors.

I have no idea what this means. I put it into Google translate and got a blue screen error

No they are not!! I have a large sector manual box. If I can dig the two out I'll photo them

Large sector manual box was mainly a van thing (I had one at one time). I'm not sure if they ever showed up in A-bodies as original equipment.

72 and earlier A-body the center link stud on the pitman points up. On the 73 and later, the stud points down. This is on the MANUAL steering box. Forget about large and small sector!

I need the stud to point down like 73+. Are all the selector output shafts the same for manual boxes? Lots of conflicting info... I thought they increased from 1.1" to 1 2" in 73

They're all the same for A, B and E body manual boxes. Again, ALL of the A, B, and E body manual steering boxes are small sector. The manual boxes did not change to a large sector for A, B and E bodies.

The only manual boxes that are different are the C-body manual boxes and some of the van manual boxes. BUT, they're easily identified, and they did not come as original equipment on A-bodies. I'm not sure saying NEVER is a good idea with Ma Mopar, but if it happened, it was either a mistake or not a standard production line build.

The only boxes that changed from small to large sector output shafts in 1973 were the power steering boxes.

Clear as mud? You still need K7075.

For those that just have to see it, here are the pictures from the link over at BigBlockDart that 70aarcuda already posted. The large sector manual box is from a C-body or van, not an A-body, regardless of year.

I couldn't have said it better!

So I just found the magic recipe of heat, hammer, puller, and impact to get the pitman arm off. I was surprised to find it is a taper spline. No wonder why they get so stuck. Thank you all for the assistance!!
