Hello Sages,

I have a 64 Dart that I am doing some mod's and upgrades on.

I Removed the Steering Column and intend to rebuild and clean it.
I found that the rubber that holds in the lower bearing in place was completely gone and the bearing was just floating with ~3/8" of play around the bearing. (A bit scary and Not Safe).

Question is can a 68-76 Column Bearing support (plastic housing with 3 bolts locating it) be made or retrofitted to work in the 64 column for that lower bearing?

Thanks,

Greg

Not sure if it helps but I got a bearing from napa that fit both shaft and tube. I just crimped outer tube around bearing near edge and punched tube a couple places around inside set of sealed bearing. Actually was smoother than stock IMO.

Thanks Dave,

Do you happen to have a Part # for that Bearing?

No I dont few years ago. But Believe shaft is 5/8" or 3/4" and tube I.d. is? Should be able to measure............ common size bearing to get quickly.

Dave.

I don't believe the early cars had a bearing at steering box end of the column. A plastic bushing was all I've ever seen vulcanized to the rubber seal that seals the steering column tube from engine bay. This column seal/bushing is available from several vendors like Layson's, Year One, etc.. Never tried mycuda's actual bearing fix but I like it.

Why do you need a bearing down there? You got a top bearing and another bearing in the steering box with a non moving coupler on the other end. 3 bearings on a 36 inch shaft is overkill. What you got down there is a dust seal.

In my case I think I cut the tube down for clearance reasons.
And then decided from there just to find a bearing to fit and it worked out fine

I didnt realize that was just a dust seal. I thought It was a bearing. - I think I might like to replace it with a bearing anyway as I am building a Track Day / Autox Car and It seemed pretty wiggly when it was stock.
