If the wires are all melted at the switch you may want to look further!

That harness connector for headlight switch can be purchased brand new. Amazon? Ebay? Part stores? Its a replacement part for lots of applications just like the switches. More common to melt down in Jeeps. Slantsixdan / danielsternlighting.com could guide you right to it.

Awe the windshield leak or wiper leak? Just clean them up if possible, better than splices IMO.

Get a small cup or a one once shot glass and some evaporust and soak a few or so a little while. Likely you can dunk the whole connector and wires with no ill effects to the connector and clean those wire connectors right up.

Replace the connectors then. They are pretty cheap if you have the correct tool to crimp them back.

tied baking soda and electric connection cleaner then small wire brush and they just are bad ..

Evaporust works wonders, weather it will hold up or not in the long run, no idea! Maybe a spray silicon afterwards? Female connectors and recrimp is my next move. I hate splices when they can be avoided!

Don’t forget your car is over 50 years old and that moisture has creaped up the wire inside. A new harness might be worth saving up for. Just saying.
