So here is my issue, need some help from the experts. I have a 741 housing with a 3.55 Sure Grip. I got it in a trade. I started to hook the driveshaft, 7260 U Joint, and the yoke didn't have any straps so I went looking. However... the yoke takes U-Bolts. I purchased some Dorman U-Bolts (81002) that were for 1.062 Caps. The problem is they bottom out before they take up. I looked at the yoke and it has this on the back of it: 072640 and RMASTEEL. My Question, does anyone know who makes the yoke? What U-bolts do I need to find? I really hate to drop the pumpkin and work the yoke issue over a couple of bolts!

Part of the problem is the caps are to small in diameter. Probably a 1350 yoke. a 7260 yoke uses a cap diameter of 1.078 while a 1350 is 1.188. Why your U bolts bottom out before they get tight.

Ok, that could be it, but Chrysler didn't use a 1350 U Joint did they? My caps mic-ed at 1.0675.

741 & 742 yokes can be removed in the car & a new one put on if needed, or even for pinion seal replacement.

So no need to pull the whole center section to replace the yoke.

The 489 cases with the crush sleeve are a different story.

Well at least that is some good news. Still don't know what my issue is however. When I tried to torque up the nuts, I was hitting on the inside of the yoke, like the yoke needed low profile nuts.

I can post some tomorrow. I got under tonight and when the bolts didn't work I called it a night. I also see another problem. The u-joint doesn't have any c clips and the yoke doesn't have the tabs to keep it centered. So I might have a few problems. The shaft I bought from a member on slant 6.org. It is a Ball and Trunnion conversion shaft with the slip yoke mod on the trans end. I need to get to the bottom of this. I thought this would be simple!

You may be better off replacing that yoke. But the 7260 u-joint in your driveshaft should have centering C clips. Contact me I can help you on a replacement yoke.

I dont recall if you can swap 741 and 742 yokes but if you can I might have the correct yoke for you and would swap if yours is a 1350. .. I want a spare for hwy gears...

Yokes are interchangeable between 489, 741, and 742. Only difference is the spline count. Either 10 spline or 29 spline.

I believe I have 1 of each in both 7260 and 7290s.
I sold a bunch a few years ago...

Look up U joint girdles Summit or Jegs . Jegs list a bunch of them with the cap sizes. Jegs and Moroso . Part # 710-8550 (Jegs)is for Mopar Spicer 7260 as a example.

You don't need to change the yoke. Just get the correct u-joint. You may need a conversion or "bastard" u-joint with the driveshaft side being different than the yoke side. Start by carefully measuring the mating parts, and also note how they are designed to assemble together. Then go to a site like Denny's Driveshafts and buy the u-joint you need. This is true... However that means he will need to change yokes to a 1350 (Assuming thats what he has) on any future pumpkins and if he blows a u-joint he wont be able to find one locally.

If it were me I'd just buy two of them. Still easier (and cheaper) than messing with the yoke.

I have some pictures to share. Driveshaft, yoke, u-joint etc. So I don't have any idea what yoke is on the rear. I have decided the drive shaft has the wrong u-joint for what I have anyway. So I am think about just getting another driveshaft built.
Here are the pics

So it looks like you already have a mongrel u-joint (no c-clips on one half). You sure cannot use the u-joint with that yoke. I'll bet you just need a regular "7260" u-joint with c-clips on both halves. If the yoke measures 2.625" between the flats where the c-clips sit, that's what it looks like you need.

In the last picture that is the wrong u-joint for that yoke. There are no clips on the caps.

What is that shaft out of a truck?

that is a custom shaft for eliminating the ball and trunion on an early A-Body 833.... Its actually a great way to do it.
