I am considering converting my 64 Dart GT to a standard shift transmission. I am looking for the easiest way to accomplish this task. I need a shopping list. I know I need a bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, and an A body clutch pedal set. I would prefer a 4 speed. In addition, I am not sure if I need a different crossmember or driveshaft. My rearend is a stock 7.25. I also want to use a mini starter for future engine modifications. I am not in a hurry, I want to start collecting items for this conversion. Which transmissions should I consider, and what donor cars would make the best candidates for an easy conversion? I do believe there is a floor template kit available to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter hump. I currently run a pushbutton 904. So any help with my shopping list would be apppreciated.

Since you have a 64, the best donors are going to be 64-66 for the bellhousing, pedals, Z Bar, etc. the floor hump for those years is not reproduced, 66 is different from 64/65 where the shifter mounts and spendy when you can find one. Those years will use the 833 with the ball and trunnion flange which should not be consider a deal breaker for either the B & T driveshaft or preferably the conversion driveshaft. You can use the later 833OD which will require the OD bellhousing. It will also require some other conversion parts as a friend of mine found out for his 65 Valiant. He sourced them from Brewers. IDK if a 67-up 833 will bolt up to the 64-66 slant bell - Brewer’s would know for sure. Hope this helps some

When the listing the listing says “alm” does that mean aluminum? If so, then it’s for the Overdrive transmission. The original 64-66 bellhousing is cast iron. I can take a pic of the parts number on my 65 bell when I get home later today. IIRC @Bigboy 68 has at least 1 64 bellhousing that was for sale.

I am really impressed with the Brewers Performance 4 speed selections and pricing. Therefore, I have to ask, how much would it cost to rebuild a 4 speed 883 transmission, if I had to hire someone to do this for me. Now I know, that it could vary depending on the amount of gears etc that need to be replaced. I am looking for an average estimate which could sway my decision to buy a complete kit from brewers, or try to find a good candidate for rebuilding.

My friend (and also a member here) had Brewers rebuild his 833OD that’s going behind a 340 in his 65 Valiant. He dropped it off at one show and picked it up at a later show to save on shipping. IIRC he said the rebuild was right at $700 and did require some new internals. I’d check with him for better info but he’s currently in Afghanistan and communications isn’t the greatest!

Thank you, therefore, I can save quite a substantial amount of money by acquiring my own 4 Speed 883 core, and having it rebuilt. I really appreciate your input.

Ok, so here is what I need to know. I do believe my current crossmember works for both the 904 and 883. Now, would I need to change the driveshaft if I were to use a 64-65 A body 883?

Crossmembers are the same. If your current transmission is either a 3 speed manual or 904 with the ball and trunnion flange, then your B & T driveshaft will bolt up to a 64/65 A Body 833.

I will be using a 65 833 with the B & T flange in my wagon but with a conversion driveshaft with a slip joint in the front.
