Dumb question how in the heck does one take the rear brake shoes of. Can not figure out how to remove the spring like rod that holds the shoe to the back plate. Shoes are on a 66 Dart 170

Push the washer and twist. The hole is slotted for the tab on the hold down pin. You can use pliers or a special tool. Something like this.

Also- if rusted- you may need to spray with penatration oil first. I’ve seen them seize. If you look at the back side of the backing plate you can always cut the nail head off as long as you get new hardware and don’t plan on reusing the parts.

All those parts are sold in a kit from Advamced auto or NAPA or pretty much any car parts store. Keep us posted on progress.

With the right parts I would say possibly. The backing plates would have to be drilled for the pins of course and the pins the right length. The 9" brakes are pretty narrow so the pins would be pretty short.

I don't see any kits for 9" brakes with the pins.

Thanks that was my next question I will try.
I don't know if they will work but worth a try. Seeing those kits reminds me I should buy up some for both of my cars. I have a self adjuster cable or two missing and all the hardware is original on both cars. Breaking a spring or a rusty hold down pin could certainly ruin your day.

Yeap by the end of the day I will probably break every one of them and Thank you.

I made up a tool that will work in removing the Brake shoes of my 66 Dart. Its basically a rod with a slot on the end push it thru the center of the hold down spring push in and turn while holding the tab in back of the back plate and it worked.

Yes they look like those and yes they are 9 inch brakes.

Real simple. Reach in behind the shoe and disengage the hook on the spring from the bracket on the backing plate. A long pair of needle nosed pliers helps.
