Hi all, I have a 66 dart with a 440 of unknown provenance but a lumpy cam of some sort and an edelbrock single plane intake w/a performer 750 carb and a 727 with what feels like a stock stall converter.

My current headers are some diy customs likely modified b-body undercar units that were wrapped by the PO and are rotting out.

The quotes I’ve gotten for replacement headers are in the 3k range so I am looking at exhaust manifold options. I currently have a set of c body logs on the way to test fit and get a basic feel for what may work. I may go to hp manifolds if needed but want to use the cheaper units to feel out issues first.

My first question is what intake should I go with? It’s a street car so a dual plane, low height unit (currently I am touching the hood with a 2” air cleaner mounting stud.)

My second question is how do these engines run when they are over cammed with restrictive exhaust manifolds? I’m not a mopar guy and basically bought the car on a whim and really don’t want to open up the can of worms and “while I’m in there” that a cam swap will entail unless needed.

Sounds like you'll need to use a low profile intake. Perhaps a Performer intake or maybe even a factory cast iron unit. You might be able to find an old factory aluminum dual plane (made by Edelbrock). They show up at swap meets sometimes.

If you put cast iron manifolds on it then you'll want to stick with a fairly mild camshaft, especially with a stock type dual plane intake.

Old Edelebrock CH4B, similar to DP4B but for 10.725 deck height of 440, very close performance to new edelbrock RPM. Edelbrock base performer is pretty close to stock height as well. Another stock height manifold was the old 440 Edelbrock streetmaster, a small and very effective single plane manifold that has a cult following. A weiand action plus looks like a good choice as well, and mopar performance at one time made a dual plane aluminum manifold. Have you tried Sanderson out for headers? They may have something more reasonable than what you have quoted.

Thanks for the suggestions. No, I haven’t heard of Sanderson but I’ll look into it. I have talked to everyone from Schumacher to Mancini to Mazzolini to TTI and haven’t had any luck.

The quotes are from a few different custom header makers but I live near the Dyson Racing garage and headquarters so will probably use them for any fabrication that is needed.

On a related note, is there a good list anywhere of intake dimensions? Obviously I am most concerned with mounting height in this application.

Edelbrock lists their intake dimensions on their site as Weiand does on Holley performance site. Victory Library on line has some good information on intakes overall, but heights are usually mentioned as a side note as in may or may not be too tall.

Thanks, I just found that victorylibrary site. I'm actually trying to figure out what I have installed, its been painted and the only cast info appears to be the Edelbrock script. I think its an old torker or related as it has the front screw hole they do (I'm not sure what they are for) but the boss leading up to it is curved not straight. In any event I think a dual plane would make more sense for street use.

Im going to use this in my 67 Notch. 440/4speed/shortnd 3.91 posi
Damn got intake turned around . nipple should be in back. Ha Ha

A buddy took the 383 out of his 70 Bee and installed a 440 (which is a bit taller). He has the factory fresh air hood that he wanted to keep. He used the old Edelbrock CH4B and it worked without modifications. With that intake, a 750, fairly mild cam, and headers his 440 dynoed485 horse and almost 500 lb/ft. Those old Edelbrocks work well.

Isn’t that a small block intake? Or is that a 440 inch small block? Just curious as to what brand it is... oh, my bad, not a small block, didn’t see the pic with front distributor...

Being that is a small block intake, is that for the early 273 bolt angle or the 67 and later 273/318 bolt angle? Would you be interested in selling it?

Ya my bad, wrong pict. So sorry. This is right 440 duel intake

What do you mean! How about this!

Imagine a Ramcharger or Dodge truck with these long rams and a set of motorhome/truck manifolds inverted with a turbo on each side, tractor puller type stacks off the injectors, a set of blow through FI-Tech injectors, and no hood... WOW, my family is right, there really is something wrong with me!

Dying to put a 6 pack fiberglass hood on myself, needing some more room for the future!
