Seems there are a few different mats available. Has anyone got a clue on jow to determine what one is correct for the car?

The type of pattern depended on what day it was.
So the most important thing, would be the fit.
Order one for a 68 Dart hard top, and you should be good to go.

Pick what you like? They had no set pattern. There is some truth to what the first person said. If they were running low on one pattern? They used what was available.

For the 68 and 69 applications, your more likely to see either a tan or gray plaid. As others have said, it was what ever they grabbed was what was placed in the car as to the color scheme. Each body style had distinctive mats as for relief cuts to insure a proper fit. The 68 and 69 Dodge and Plymouth B-body applications actually have variations based on manufacturing plants on the location of the trunk supports which impacts the cuts on those mats which most vendors are not even aware of.

A second thing is to make sure that you know which style of mat your purchasing. Some vendors sells the much cheaper vinyl mats at almost the same price as the heavier rubber mats. The factory mats were the heavy rubber style for these year models. Do yourself a favor and purchase the rubber mat. The vinyl mat is basically a printed vinyl table cloth.

Although you have multiple vendors selling the trunk mats, for this application, they are basically all coming from either ACC Carpets or REM.

I bought one from Rem. For the money it's not bad. Will it be a exact replacement? No. Again they will miss certain cut outs near the rear. Buy whats in your budget.
