Hi,

Got at the tilt flaming river steering column for my 67 Barracuda. Used the mounts that they sell, hung the dash in, put a seat in and got a 13-3/4" steering wheel.

It looks to me like the stock steering column might sit up a bit higher than this does. With the column tilted all the way up I have enough leg room to lift my leg to push the clutch and brake in (with the seat all the way back, I'm 5'10"). I figured the tilt column would give me more room to adjust. When its straight its too low and my leg hits the steering wheel to get my foot on the clutch.

Anyone else had this issue? Looks like this in the only mounting bracket available.

Thanks,
Steve

I would definitely like to see that column mount up tighter against the dashboard, knowing what you paid for it I would be expecting a whole lot out of their tech support right now!

They're probably not gonna do much for me. I'll just have to cut the tabs off this $100 bracket and get them welded down 1/2" to get to column up where I need it.

Yes, I must agree. I have heard their tech support and customer service is somewhat lacking and they tend to take a one size fits all approach to a lot of their merchandise... I love the finish quality but at those prices one would like to believe they are a little more thorough with R&D. It looks like you probably have the best option this side of making your own bracket.

I know this might require taking it back out which looks like you're going to have to do anyways but somehow getting that sheet metal backed away on the dash to get the bracket up on top or inside the dash. Instead of on the bottom of the dash and connecting up to it get that part on the other side of it and that should give you a damn near an inch?

I have one. So I used a 2 inch lower column tilting bearing. Also used the factory upper column support and welded a tab to the column, that was tapped for a button head bolt to keep the column from turning. The bolt goes through the factory column support. I’ll get pics in the morning if ya need it.

I bought the direct fit 69-down b-body, it dropped right in with the factory clamp. Just had to cut the D shaft to length. It must a have took 6 emails to their tech support to drag out a drawing of the B-body column and you have to have their bottom floor plate.

I know that doesn't help you now, but a guy I spoke too with one said he flipped the bracket you have and used spacers. Looking at it installed I'd try that without the U shaped clamp and some spacers to snug it against the factory top. Maybe put a thin piece of rubber up top to isolate it?

B-body version installed below. I still need to finish the install.

Good point on turning the bracket over and using spacers. I wondered about that but didn’t know how much hacking he might have to do on the column bracket under dash.

I would suggest maybe sitting n the car and see if you want it lower or higher. I know its a tilt but you may like or dislike the change. I'm 6'2" so a higher column is desirable to me.

Thanks for the input everyone! I flipped the mount upside down. I have another dash frame that already had the radio hole cut out, so I just trimmed a spot for the bracket to fit up between where the studs mount. Looks like I will need 1" spacers and some longer bolts to test fit it.

I didn't like the look of the gap, but the real thing I didn't like was that the steering wheel was too low. I want it higher so I have more leg room for putting my feet on the clutch and brake.

I'll get some longer bolts tomorrow and try again tomorrow night.

Thanks
Steve

Trimmed the dash, flipped the mount and added about an inch of spacers. Will put the wheel right where it needs to be.

I gutted the original column and cut the housing down and used stock floor mounts the flaming river column slid right inside the original housing. I used set screw to hold column in the housing.

Thanks! I'll stick with what I have now. Bought the mounts a year ago, don't have packaging to return.

On another note.... you have a link to what you did with your gauges? I'm putting a 5.7 in, still haven't decided on wiring harness/ecu and gauges

Thanks

I don’t have a link. They are speedhut guages speedhut.com I think. They are smaller than the opening I made a bezel ring and powder coated them. Customizable guages go to their website and you can make the guages to see what features you want. No price markup it is included they are in Utah. The founder of auto meter son owns it.

The speedometer is gps so you don’t have to worry about hooking it up to trans. The tach is 1 wire to your coil pack. Easy install. And programabme idiot lights for temp oil and gas. For the price of 1 auto meter quad gauge you can get speedometer, tach and quad.

I'll check it out, thanks!

What route did you take for engine harness/ecu?

I have one but I kick myself every day for trying to make it work because it just turned into a nightmare. I ended up modifying my firewall and everything else to bolt it in.

I may cut it all back out and weld in another factory piece from another firewall.

Live and learn. Flaming river isn't what it's cracked up to be. Factory column and the way it mounts is much more solid. I'll get pics up so you can make sense of what I'm talking about.
