how much horsepower can the 904 take?

-
The one I have from Performance Automatic is rated at 400 hp. It just has a shift kit and probably some better material but it's not really "built up".
Now, since I really need a book titled automatic transmissions for dummies, does that mean I cannot buy individual parts to make a performance kit for my '64 904? Also, I would have the work done by a shop, since I feel this type of work is beyond, my level of expertise. I need to know what to tell someone to do to it.

I have a person I know that uses a 904 in his 10 sec b-body race car. Lighter and faster he claims. But he also builds them himself and has do a lot of "trick" work to make it faster and reliable.

You could definitely buy individual parts but there are probably kits that feature many upgrades. Of course a 400 hp transmission is a lot easier to source parts than a 500+ hp 904.

I am considering around 400 hp for a street performance show and go car. I will never race it, not my thing. I am considering building the engine and running the Torqstorm Supercharger.

Not exactly "trannys for dummies" but I spent a lot of time trying to explain things in simpler terms so it made sense to me! :):)

I appreciate all of your knowledge. I believe that I am convinced that I should stay with my 904. One last question, is it reasonable to keep the pushbutton shifter with the performance I am suggesting, 400 HP street and show car. Or, would it be best to convert to a floor shifter?

Good grief! Thread back from the dead. I guess I'll throw this in. Bucky Hess usde a 904 for a time in his Barracuda drag car. Hemi powered and ran 8s. Of course, it was properly built but it held up.

So far I have not been able to find a performance torque converter for my 64 pushbutton 904. Therefore, I have to ask, should I use a 67 and up 904 and convert to a floor shift, in order to do what I want. The torque converters all indicate 67 and up.

Are you just looking for something on the shelf...??? Or have you spoken with PCT, Dynamic, Frank Lupo; people who build converters?? To be honest, you are not likely to find a converter on the shelf for your car, I suspect though, you could get one built. It will cost some money, but it will be built to your specifications.

Check it out.............

I am in research mode right now. I am trying to prevent starting the project and then find out that I cannot do this or that. Therefore, since I want to run a performance stall converter, and it cannot be done, I want to try something else, in order to make it happen. I am thinking that the pushbutton style is probably not suited for a performance set up. Do you know anyone who runs a 400 HP slant 6 with a pushbutton shifter? I suspect that they convert to a floor shift with maybe a B and M shifter. And, I am also not sure which 904 year would be a good candidate to convert to a floor shift style.

You can get a converter........it will be custom made.....but you can get a converter.........as far as a pushbutton tranny not suited for performance is a load of horse ****......tell that to the Super Stock drag racers of the day who had a choice of eather push button or 3 spd stick transmission........a lot of racers went push button.....known as a type writer dash

You can get it done, it's just not gonna be instant gratification

There are a bunch of recipes on this site to build a solid 904 yourself for around $500 or less. So much black magic about TF transmissions. They are SIMPLE. Get the video and a book or two and learn to fish. Any parts you need can be found at places much less expensive than the popular "mopar" trans builders will charge. Northern auto, WIT, bulkpart, etc. They sell the exact same parts.

You can build your own and have a spare, or 2, for the cost of one of the builders transmissions.

If you can build an engine, you can build a TF.

904 REVERSE WOUND DIRECT DRUM SPRING

$19.95
One of the things that you need. The Factory spring unwinds itself at high RPM. This replacement is wound the opposite direction so that doesn't happen. Much lower price than that multiple spring kit from a & a.

No idea....couple of weeks I was looking for some parts and tried their website and nothing.

Funny, I searched last week for Makco which was the name as well and gone. Bummer
