Was just on FBBO and read about a new radial class for the working man. Said they expect cars to run 4.20s in the 1/8 mile. This is a working mans class? Holy crap I need a new job. What average working man can afford to build a 4.20 car. Are we talking 50 to 100k for a car that's competitive. I must be out of touch.

Yeah right, a car that will run 8 or 9 seconds in the quarter....not on my budget.

4.20s in the eighth is more than fast enough to get you killed. A certified chassis for that car would carry a hefty price tag and probably be built by a guy by the name of Bickell. I have aquantenances that run top dragster with BBC big chief based (600 plus inch) that are running this kind of speed.

@TomMoparMan here runs 8.80's in his Duster and he wouldn't do it on drag radials.

I think NHRA must be trying to kill off some of its working class drivers and spectators, the 10 and 12 wide radial drag classes are plenty scary enough.

Yeah, like I said, my professional mechanic friends run that run rail dragsters are going close to 200 in the eighth, 588 big chief and 632 BBC I haven’t looked at yet.

To be competitive any racing class these days takes deep pockets. For me just running my car on test and tune or track rental days are the way too go. I never believe in chasing numbers. Just being able to bang gears and feel the rush going fast is good enough for me. Maybe I'm boring but with my real working man budget that's what I can afford. I would to race in pure stock or F.A.S.T. classes but again $$$$$.

If that’s your tunnel rammed hemi in your profile page, I’d love to be boring like you! Lolol!

How my friends out the road go that fast, apologies for the blurry full car shot, I don't remember the exact engine builder but it's machined in the valve covers. This is the 588 big chief "Car?" I would call it a rail but it puts it into perspective of an actual car that could run like this. Be like a Pat Musi car on drag radials. Oh, Hell No! I don't have nearly enough life insurance to drive something of that nature. The kind of junk where you double the horsepower at the crank with boost or more fuel and oxidizer (NAWS, in a nod to Rusty!).

Test and tune is what we do, my dad, my brother and i race each other...that gets expensive too.

I myself am guilty of wanting to drive a top alcohol funny car, just not on drag radials. Back when Bristol was still IHRA, that and Pro-Mod were my favorite classes to watch. I really miss the old track there! The new one is great for the street fight drags and everything, but the old track surface made it so much more of a drivers race.

Those numbers require at minimum close to $100,000 if you piece together a shoestring operation from used parts that you build yourself, on an open trailer rig. But you'll be competing with guys that probably have half a million in the whole operation.

First time you break or crash, you're out for weeks or months....and the top guys are either fixing it with spare parts at the event or coming back in a couple weeks.

Working mans class, yeah right...

Learn to do it yourself and save! I just built a 6.0 cert moly car for this class in my garage.

Got some pics for us, if your not too busy? Oh, what are the specifics on the drag radials? Are they full slicks and what size is allowed?

And that’s if your not seriously injured or killed in the process. All racing (and everything else) is dangerous, but the risks get so much greater at this level.

I can’t help but to love cars at this level, definitely fun to watch!

That is an awesome looking build! I bet that will be a scary little handful for sure, reminds me a whole lot of a hemi colt (Another one of my favorites!)
This one is replacing another one that went through the traps backwards at 160mph. This is his old street car that went 8.07 at 171 the pass before this.
