I've seen the plastic fin section of the grill painted an argent silver and painted black. Which is correct? My factory original grill inserts are argent silver.

I think the formula s model grills were painted black, at least in 1969

my 68 inners were very dark, I painted them black and they looked good. When I had them professionally redone, he painted them argent silver. I think they looked better black , but not worried about now.
I have read before that the form S cars were all black. I bought a new one in 1968, but don`t remember !

Just telling you what I seen.
And what I was told.
Maybe bad info.
Wouldnt be the first.
I appreciate your response, just trying to figure out why some are silver and some are black and which is correct. Formula S, non Formula S maybe?

The 68 plastic grills had two different ones and 3 styles
I will just do the left side part numbers as reference
1-part number 2786549 It's the thinnest one, Grey molded colored plastic, the fins are grey. Around the base and the horizontal bars are painted black. On this style grill on the inside (backside) turns like a brownish color after time.
2- part number 2786549 and 2949185 both number on this one also says chrome on it. Slightly darker grey molded plastic and thinker than the one above. Painted the same as above. Stays grey on the back side
3- Same grill as above 2786549 and 2949185 both numbers and the chrome on it. This one was chromed and everything was painted black except the face of the vertical bars that was left chrome.
This what I have come across over the years.

If you look really close, that dark blue car has 67 model grilles. Their flat egg crate insert shows more of inner surround and park/turn fixture. Profile of plastic baskets hide more of those areas.
The black plastic baskets seem to disappear in front of a black core support and radiator unless they have the chrome face edge ( spring special? ). I repainted my medium gray plastic to match dark argent rally wheel centers.

Davescuda is on to something. Only after restoring my grill on my '68 cuda have I become aware that there are differences in some 'cuda's grill finishes. This may not be for everyone, but mine is a restoration of a very original, low mileage, BB car. My grills are a natural light grey plastic and have been masked and painted flat black on the back edges at the factory. I didn't have the heart to spray the whole part argent silver which would have made the silver part much brighter but would also cover the factory masked black areas. So since my grills were in great shape I thoroughly cleaned them and put them on the car. This results in my grill being very original but probably a little darker grey due to it's age. I have also acquired another grill which has sharp, chromed edges but painted black. There are differences and I don't understand them but will follow this thread to learn.

There was also a "spring special " for 68 I believe which included chrome fins and red decal on back deck panel?

pictures of the dual part number (chrome ones) with no chrome on them.

I wasn't too sure about the chrome grills because I'd never seen any, so I actually spent last winter pinstriping mine. Pretty sure it won't stand up to a pressure wash, but it looks OK I think. Tedious though.
