any tricks to installing a pilot bushing? I tried frezzing the bushing and putting it in that way,it went about half way and then shattered like glass.the crank did not have a bushind in it and I'm not sure if its the right size hole.any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. THANKS.:poke:

That would be the easiest way if it's not sized for a stock bushing.

install pilot bushing - Google Search

If the car was an automatic there's a decent chance the crankshaft wasn't drilled and machined for a pilot bushing. Use the measurements above to check, but if it wasn't drilled for a manual transmission there isn't a method for installing the standard pilot bushing short of having the crank drilled.

You can however use that roller bearing that was linked above, it fits into the outer register on the crank so it's ok if the original crankshaft wasn't drilled completely. You may also have to shorten the input shaft slightly, as it may interfere with the crankshaft if it wasn't drilled deep enough. You'll have to measure that depth and see if the input shaft will interfere.

It is pretty cool when Brewer's agrees with you!

thanks for the help guys.watched the video, did a little work with a rotobroch and then pressed the thing in with a puller tool.

still trying to get the motor built.one thing at a time.today that was trying to get the pilit bushing installed.hade to hook on to the cherry picker and get it off the engine stand to work on it.seems like a little thing, but ends up using most my day.monday its trying to build or buy a allan wrench long enough to turn the oil pump for pre oiling.

Cut an old distributor drive off and weld a push rod to it, cheap tool.
Or buy a piece of 5/16 hex stock at fastenal.
Or buy a an actual prime tool from Mancini's, pretty cheap.

Here is a pic of one I made.

I found this super long 3/8 drill bit and ground down the round end to make a hex to fit inside the oil pump hex opening....free-and it still works as a drill bit...bonus

I ran into a problem when trying to install a bushing in my 273. What I did, since I could not find the bearing, was I put the bushing on a small sanding drum (3/4") and used a file to bring the outside diameter down to just a few thousandths of an inch larger than the hole in the crankshaft. Then I put it in the freezer for a few hours, while I heated up the crankshaft with a torch. Then I gently tapped it in. Worked out very well indeed.
