Has any of you heard of a company out of Ohio that makes, flat 4 bolt mains for sbm?
I think the name is Program or something like that.

I asked my machine shop about ARP main cap bolts he laughed and said have you ever seen a Mopar main Bolt compared to a Ford or Chevy? Basically saying don't waste your money. Well I've been drag racing it for four years no problems...

There's a reason Mopars don't have/need 4 bolt mains.

Unless you get into ultra high end power.

I'm a big block guy, and have never seen the bottom end of a 318 / 340. I'm assuming they are like really big? What size are the main cap bolts? 1/2"?

I don't remember if I read it in my copy of a Mopar Performance engine book, or "How ti Hot Rod Small Block Mopars", that the two bolt bottom end of a small block mopar could survive almost 2hp per cube...........food for thought

My 340 has 4 bolt mains, stock 70 340. I make moderate power with it around 1200RWHP and the jury is still out. Here are some thoughts:

1. The splayed bolts go through the main and into the water jacket. The potential for leaks is high.

2. There doesn't appear to be enough meat in the main cap to be effective (we will see)

3. 2 Bolt mains do have their limitations and most would say that its important to hold the cap in place, I think a better quality crank is money better spent.

4. An aftermarket cap is money well spent along with good studs, again if the block pinches the crank its all done and goes kaboom.

5. True if you make big power an aftermarket block is cheap insurance, I mean most short blocks cost 3-5 grand in parts and heads vary but to make big power you have a lot of money in those heads. So why throw away 8-10 grand when it does go boom when you could've spent 4k more in an aftermarket block. Oh and by big power I mean 750 plus.

Will hopefully be making that kind of hp. I have new Scat 4340 crank Dome pistons and W 2 race heads with 285 and 220 flow. Lunati cam 302/310 279/281 duration 640/640 lift 104 lsa w/1:5 plan on using 1:6 rockers so will bump lift
a bit. Wish I had extra $$$$ for new block. With compression being high. Need all the$$$$ just for gas lol. Thanks for the food for thought.

Sorry wrong info. 106 lsa/100icl 302/310 Is advertised duration/ @.50 is273/281. Rpm range is 4500/ 8000.that is the reason I was thinking 4 bolt mains. Going with ARP stus and saying my prayers.

..."moderate" 1200 HP at the wheels...

Uh, moderate?

Depends on the power level and how you reach it. From what you describe, the ARP studs should be fine NA. If you are boosting it, Supercharger or N2O could benefit from Program caps (still 2 bolt) because the mains will flex. If it's turbocharged, you may be ok because the power is not as destructive on the crank and block.

You're fine with stock caps and studs. Make sure the mains are align honed with the new studs.
