My back-up lamps wont work unless i piush hard on the 4 speeds lever. The reverse linkage is correctly adjusted and as there is no adjustement on the switch. should i replace the reverse switch or the problem is somewhere else?

BTW, if i replace the switch, do i need to drain the transmission oïl?

Thanks

if the lights come on at all its not the transmission neutral safety switch look for a bad (loose) ground or contact near the shifter

The switch is just a open/closed 2 wire contact. Ground isn't a factor. The switches do wear out though. Pushing on the linkage to close the switch suggests that you might fudge the adjust a tad. Get more use from a worn switch, while you hunt a replacement at least.

your right I was thinking more of a bad ground in the wires as you trace them back to the lights, but then pushing hard on the lever wouldnt matter

ok thanks.
do i need to drain the transmission oïl before removing the switchÉ

You shouldn't have to. You will lose a little bit of fluid when you pull it out, but if you have the new switch ready and just pull one out and put the other in, it won't be much. Not enough to notice a drop in fluid level anyway considering you just fill them up until it runs out of the fill hole anyway.

If you are concerned,... pull the fill plug out after changing the switch and stick your pinky in and verify you can still feel fluid. Put a little in if you need to.

Hey Philcollins,

I ran into the same issue. If this is a new switch, you may need to mill down the mating surface of the switch in order for the contact surface to properly hit the actuator lever. I got this tip from Wayne at Brewers Transmissions (I had purchased a new 4-speed from him). After I got it back from the machine shop, it worked perfect!

BTW , He suggested 30- 60 thousands. I split the difference and went to50.

Machining the switch so it goes farther in seems like the best solution. The aftermarket should offer such a "problem solver" switch. Probably never will though. Good luck with it.

I will tell you that the 4 speed back up lamp aftermarket switches sold today are of a cheap design. The one on the left is a factory original. The one on the right is the aftermarket one. Just for starters the hex area surface for your socket wrench is too small. I found out that before the switch is seated your socket will start to slip off of the the hex.

Yeh, LOL, but HE will probably show up here too!!!!
You know what? You're right. Owners change but the cars and this forum remains the same. Just new owners with same problems and asking the same questions. sigh
