As a previous owner of two first gen dodge cummins trucks, I cant help but chuckle when I see $15k+ W250 CTD's.

They are great looking trucks, the CTD is awesome and the D60/NP205 combo is rock solid, and that's about it.

They're loud, slow (of course you can tweak them), and that chassis is really not up to the task of supporting an 1,100 lb. Motor.

I had an 89 D350 and one day I noticed cracks at the LCA support where it rivets to the cross member. Like an idiot I shrugged it off until one day I was backing out of the driveway and creek, crunch bang, next thing I know the left front tire is folded under the truck. Turns out in '90 they redesigned the LCA mounts to be a stamped steel integral component of the cross member. I lucked out and found someone doing a ford truck conversion who had a 1990 front chassis for $250.

One day I was rolling through a drive through in my 92 W250 (typically a tight squeeze) and my right front tire popped over the curb. As I rolled through and drove back into the lane the 1/4" stamped steel bracket that places the steering gear ripped off and I basically limped home at 15 MPH with wild steering. That cheesy bracket was a pain to get and had to shipped from a dealership across the country. I was inspecting the new one after a year or two of use and it was developing cracks which I ended up repairing with a stop drill and small gusset.

I know there are work around for this stuff, and I would pick up another one in a heartbeat - for the right price - but as far as I'm concerned, anything over $10k for a nice 1st gen W250 is not worth it. Might as well step up to a 2nd gen and have a nicer truck with a more robust chassis, more reliable injection pump and greater creature comforts. About the only drawback I see is the lame central axle disconnect system and the less stout transfer case. I know they have a few of their own issues, but the price better reflects the value.

Ever since the yeeyee kids got old enough to get a loan, and slap some interest charged on credit wide wheels on them, the prices just got plain ignorant.

LOL I don't know why you'd single out 1G Dodges vs 2nd or 3rd LOL

All of the money is because of the engine. Everyone knows Cummins makes a good engine (some kid at school said his 6.0 powerstroke was better than a cummins because he paid money to make it as reliable as a cummins???) I'm lucky enough to have this get passed down to me, my dad bought it new when i was a kid.

Never had an issue with a 2wd Cummins truck, all y'all who think they MUST have a 4wd are the problem! I blew up two common rail engines and lunched a couple injection pumps on the first gens. My buddy just left his common rail in Tennessee after throwing a rod, I am done with those POS...

One , but not the only reason , used CTD prices are so high is the cost of a new or recent new one . Why would anyone in their right mind pay $60.000 for a new Ram unless it's for business that can be written off as an expense . Most young people want diesels so they can beat the crap out of them, neglect maintainence and when it fails complain it's a p.o.s. My best friend has 2009 CTD-SRW, (used with 165K), searched a year for it . He owns an auto transport business and he loves his Cummins . Gets 12mph pulling a 22' closed car trailer . Diesels are expensive to maintain . Oil changes are about $100.00

For everyday use, I will take a two wheel drive with an LSD or locker over a four wheel drive any day. That's just a whole lot more weight and complexity to have to drag around with extra wear and tear. Of course, I don't live on the northern yukon or on the side of a mountain with a logging road for access either, though. I can do just as well with an LSD or a locker, I would rather use tire chains than have to pay for the extra fuel expense.

I have a 95 1 t, 2 wd, AT bought new (240,000 mi) , and had 3-4 1 st gen 2 wd cummins, never any problem with any except the Getrag I blew. Only had a 4 wd that I flipped 2 days after getting it out of OK.
Prices, look at cost of NEW ones. People buy them for the Cummins.

The 2001-2002 2nd gen trucks, like mine, do not have the CAD front axle. I went even further and installed a free spin hub kit. They do however have the weaker 241 DLD transfer case, but you can upgrade to the 241 DHD which also has a PTO output if needed, say for a hydraulic winch.

But I have to disagree with not having 4wheel drive. I think it’s necessary. These trucks are front heavy and they just sink. 4x4 saved me many times. But I live on a ranch so I use it daily in the winter to get off the property.

I've never ever heard of a stock CTD throwing a rod. They dont spin fast and the rods are huge. Was his CTD stock or hot rodded?

Neighbor of mine had a 12v '92 auto with 4wd and he babied the hell out of that thing. Somehow managed to never get a scratch on it despite the fact that he mainly used it to carry a camper and go hunting/camping/fishing. After he passed away the truck only had about 35k miles, sold for $29,000ish on ebay in like 2012 or so. She asked me to help take pictures of it and to list it for her so I drove it briefly and I was shocked at how much it rattled and let in air noise on the freeway despite the low mileage. That being said, my father owns a 24v '99 auto 2wd and that truck is absolutely night and day compared to the first gen and has never given up (minus 1 issue with the TPS) in the 20 years hes owned it. He loves to joke around that he is going to die before the truck does. I would get an identical one in a heartbeat but I can't bring myself to paying (and cant afford to pay) 15k for a 20 year old truck.

Well l won’t argue with four wheel drive if on a ranch, or when I was younger and doing more truck related work. I’m more just at the point to where a four wheel drive is a “as needed” vehicle instead of a necessity. I could justify a tractor more easily.

I had several of each. The most dependable was my 93. I also put a common rail in a 93. And I have two 05's. My 01 and 02 had trans issues from new. So I went to a 6spd. in the 05's and a ist gen trans behind the common rail in the 93. The 93's hold there value. They make serious power if you do the work.

Tell us about the truck with the blown small block in the seventh pic, that would be perfect in a 2wd ramcharger.

2wd is a truck with training wheels period. 4wd is like the insurance you pay on the very same truck. You hope you don't need it, but if you do, it's there. I've owned 4 CTD Dodge 4wd. A 95 SRW I bought new had 385k miles on it. 03 DRW 212K quad cab 256k traded it for a 04 SRW 212K and last a 07 quad cab bought new SRW drove it 11 1/2 years 285K miles just sold it for 17,000. I've towed fifth wheels, race car trailers.36' Work and Play toy hauler and other various trailers. The man that just bought this one from me drove up in a 05 reg cab 2500 with 498K miles on it. All of mine were automatics, I never had one rebuilt. It's the reason CTD's bring the big bucks.

I wish there was an Agree times one million button.

Imo all Cummins as a matter of fact all diesels are overpriced. 15 grand plus for a 20 or 30 year old truck with 300k miles is just plain stupid.

Trucks in general are very popular today. Look at how many people will put $15000 into a C10 out of the 60's! Which had you rather have? I see older Cummins sell for all kind of prices low and high.

Well I like them enough to buy another one today. A new 2018 CTD 4x4 Laramie Longhorn crew cab, for the bargain basement, deal of a lifetime 71,000!

..My best friend has 2009 CTD-SRW, ..Gets 12mph pulling a 22' closed car trailer..
that typo is funny.

My work mate had a new at the time Chevy Duramax shortbed (!) that got great mileage until it hydrolocked...twice! GMC paid for new motors both times. M.A.N. injectors cracked both times.

I was seriously looking for a VW Diesel truck for about 4 months. Found 2 but both were just out of reach. Just wanted a little coal roller @ 50 MPG.
