I admit I should do the search thing, probably 50 pages, but...... unless I find a stock 4 bbl CLOSE BY , what is the recommended dual plane intake for just a low compression 318 cruiser?

Edelbrock performer 318/360, get used for near giveaway prices. Weiand action plus is okay, never know the difference. In vintage intakes, offy dual-port 318, edelbrock streetmaster, edelbrock SP2P. Just plan on the performer 318/360, it usually has the most availability, I have seen them in junkyards before.

The most inexpensive and arguably the best is the Edelbrock Performer. Other notables would be an early Edelbrock and the Weiand Action Plus.

The Performer and the Weiand are set up for spreadbore carbs while the earlier Edelbrock’(s) have a square bore carb set up.

I ran the Edelbrock LD4B. I tested the 600 cfm Holley 4160 & the OE Carter 600 on top of the 318 and found them both to be equal in performance at this low level. The Edelbrock was cheaper to run. Use a thick carb base gasket to keep the carbs cool and prevent fuel percolating issues.

Info right on the first page.

LD4B,would be good also.I've seen a few of them for sale. But ,as stated, the Edelbrock performer is going the be the easiest to find.

Had to go wrong with a LD4B but they are not cheap.

Readily available, Edelbrock Performer. Best, LD4B but no choke. Lots of good ones in between and below.

I don't like the Edelbrock performer intake... Not good enough performance...

We removed a Performer from son's 318 and replaced it with a LD4B and it ran much better than with the performer...

LD4B or Weiand steath is my two choices... Weiand stealth if you want to run square bore carb like most Holleys, or Wiand action plus if you want spread bore like Thermo Quads....

I’d use the Performer.

For the record, it has a “universal” mounting pad.
Square or spread bore carbs can be used.

To run the square bore carbs, there is a thin steel plate that sits on top of a gasket that’s sanwiched between the plate and the manifold.

I have, some years past , used the Edelbrock dual plane with just a 600 Eddy's version of the AFB. Going on a 76 roadrunner with 2'45 gears! so it ain't no drag car!!!! I'm sure a good used one priced right, will be my goal!! Thanks all, for the info

An Eddy performer will be fine. Offy dual port or the the choked down runners of SP2P would make more stump pulling power, but I would just put a performer on and forget it. Your car is what it was designed for. I would top it with a new 500 AVS II. Put it on and drive it with no worries.

Imo, SP2P’s are junk...... for any application.

It would be fun to dyno one against an oe intake and a performer on a suitable motor though.

15 years ago or so I dynoed my friends oval port 396bbc that had one on it.
I had driven the car before, and it was just a hound. Absolutely dead at 4500rpm........ and pretty weak up to that point as well.
A local “396 guru” had given him a 400hp recipe....... and the SP2P was part of it.
He wasn’t happy with it, so he pulled it out and we put it on the dyno.
He was running ex manifolds, so that’s how we tested it.
I don’t recall the tq(which wasnt much), but it was 283hp.
Put some small tube headers on it, picked up about 30hp.

Changed the cam and added a Performer rpm, replaced the Ede 750 with a speed demon 650dp, re-ran with the headers....... 420hp at about 6000.
He decided the manifolds cost too much power, so he put headers on the car.
That wasn’t part of the plan when I got the new cam, I got the cam to work with manifolds.
Had I known it was going to get headers, I think there was at least another 20hp left in the cam choice.
But all of that is way off topic.

Anybody who recommends the SP2P for any HP application should be shot and burned. Edelbrock developed this intake as a gasoline saver during the crunch years of OPEC’s oil embargo. And that is the only reason to try it.

And my apologies to Garrett , I also include the Offy Dual Port in the “Fishing Weight/Boat Anchor Category. What a piece of junk!

I’m also one of those who feels the offy dual port intakes are a waste of good aluminum.

Yes, the SP2P was designed for a motorhome and is close to a 2 barrel iron 360 factory intake on flow. With 2.45 gears on a barely over 8:1 318 with a stock cam, it would work fine with a 450 cfm Holley vacuum secondary. The offy dualport gimmick manifold works very well up to about 4500 rpm before falling off and has a seat of the pants bottom end torque advantage over a performer but only on a stock engine, at least in a heavy four wheel drive.

These are definitely on my “nfw” list:

I’m pretty sure if both the SP2P and oe 360 2bbl intake were tested with an oe 360 2bbl carb....... the oe intake would win.

Ide run a Crosswind or typhoon Airgap clone before a performer (basically a aluminum clone of a OEM iron 4bbl intake) , and they are cheaper to boot. Many people are still asking alot for used Performers while the Crosswinds are selling for the same performer used prices new. I got a polished one for $40 at a swap meet. What are you going to pick up with a Performer? 25 lbs off the nose?

If it’s a performance oriented build, I respectfully agree about the SP2P. Where the OP said low compression stock 318 for cruising in a third gen RR it should be as good as the performer 90 percent of the time. It could argued that a Weiand stealth would be the best for performance because of the 318 sized runners from plenum to port. But on a stock engine with no further mods and 2.45s, I wouldn’t be afraid to use the other manifolds if one were available for very cheap to free. They work well for heavy 4x4’s with tall gears and tall tires.

I know the 600 Ed used carb I have is too much but I have it in my parts stash. Maybe I can trade it for a smaller one. Main reason I like the aluminum intake is easier for this old woreout man to change on that engine sitting in that car!! I will post a wanted ad here and see what appears!!!

I have had the Eddy performer on a few different stock type builds. In my opinion it is nothing more than a door stop. A stock intake is better. But if that’s all u can get, it’s 4bbl. Kim
