I have a 1979 360 cu in V8 in my 76 Dart Sport which develops around 350 HP. It has an Edelbrock 650 carb, 9 to 1 compression, .40 overbore a hi performance unnamed cam with no numbers and not much more. What would be a good cam to wake up this combo a bit?

If you're already at a horse/cubic inch you will probably need more than a cam to make it happen. We will need to know what cam is in there. It wouldn't make good sense to put a cam in that we would recommend to find out it was smaller and less powerful than what you already have.

Wish I had an answer for you.

Your biggest problem is not only the cam but was that rebuilt with a stock replacement piston? It could be a bit low on compression.

jean-Guy is your torque converter stock if not do you know what stall it is ?

If it really makes 350hp leave it alone and enjoy it. Run it until it needs a freshening and then you can tear into it and blueprint what you have and go from there.

The static compression, rear gear ratio, torque converter specs, transmission gearing/type, and rear tire size will need to be known before making recommendations. Any idea what cylinder heads and intake are on it? Do you know how much head work you have and what the springs/guides/retainers will allow on lift? How was the horsepower determination made? Dyno, E.T./M.P.H., or based on a confirmed build? What's the vehicle weight?

I am in league with being happy with 350 horsepower until rebuild time, that should be pretty enjoyable. If that is confirmed, what exactly are you wanting to to achieve? At that level, your probably looking at more changes than just a camshaft.

It’s unlikely that a cam change alone(no other upgrades) is going to result in any “magic”.

I agree with the others who say just run it until you’re ready to make several changes.

agree run it
is your 9:1 compression measured or a guess
did you ever post cranking compression
do you have head flows?
what rpm do you need more torque?
are you up to changing converter and gears? (higher or lower)
lot's of homework to do
you could degree wheel your current cam in the motor if you are serious about making a change
that plus compression would be a start
no easy answer

A 350 horse 360? Time slips or dyno sheets? That has to be a treat to drive with a stock converter.
