Now that my front pump questions have been answered and handled, on to the next. What ratio lever to use?. Trans had 2.9 lever, 6 springs in the high clutch pack. Ive replaced all clutches and steels with red eagle/kolene. All buushings, rings etc replaced. I am retaining my ta rmvb

I called CRT and spoke whit the owner. He asked what I wanted and my reply was "just send me everything I need to build a full race trans that will survive."

I got a 4.2 lever.

In the book by our very own Tom Hand who literally wrote the book he stated the 5.0 band should not be used as its longer stroke takes longer to release and can cause the band to not release quick enough.

I cant find the exact quote but that's the short version.

I agree but I ran a 5.0 for years in the 70's & 80's and till 94 drag raced it street raced it and it hit very hard and never broke, wore the piston or the housing. My friend broke his trans and the piston blew out so I think the band was out of adjustment it was a 4.2 lever.

I have the book open as we speak, just cant seem to find it. I know he is a member here.

Not saying it doesn't work just that if CRT didn't recomend it and Tom don't recommend it I'd just as soon not use it unless you are a very experienced trans tuner.

5.0 is for the hemi wide bands. 4.3 is probably fine.

4.2 will work. 5.0 is for the rmvb, and trans brake vb. I have been inside John Cope’s Trannies and they have all had the 5.0 lever. U adjust it to 1 1/2 turns from 72 inch pounds. U also need both springs in the front servo. U also need at least 10 springs in the front drum. I have built a few with the 5.0 band and never had a problem. Do u have pics of the front pump and converter hub that u changed out. Kim

Will take pics today

Like some of you have stated I too have used the 5.0 lever with manual valve bodies. It was the norm in the 70's.Never a problem in both 727 and 904's.Now it's the 4.2 that is the norm.

Should there be a small steel race between the output and input with a 3eared bronze?

The tranny i pulled out of my truck, originally came from a 71 340 demon. Upon teardown, everything attached to the input shaft was bad. I bought a core tranny from a 86 motorhome(short tail shaft) i reused all of the parts attached to my original tailshaft and used everything attached on the input from the core including the front pump. The core is also non lockup
