A friend of mine is building a 1969 340 but he's using a 1972 cast crank and vibration damper. He ask me which TCC he should use 67-69 or 70 and up i told i would have to think about it,which one would be correct?

He can use either one, it wont matter. Part that will be a pain is getting a matching pulley set.
Verify TDC #1 on the damper too.

what year is the car?? and really what year is the radiator?? of coarse the inlet /outlet has to match the water pump

pre 70 timing is on the passenger side

70 up will have the timing marks correct to the 72 damper, but now he will have to swap out the radiator. You always should check TDC. I have seen them very far out, some more than 10 degrees.

Don't know if this applies but didnt the pilot hole in the back of the crank for the torque converter / snout of manual trans change at some point? Cracked Flex Plate post #5. according to the post the change happened in 68 so if you are using a 68 and later trans it shouldn't matter

Not really, you can still run the newer cover and find the older bolt on timing tab or make your own Then install timing tape. You will need the older water pump. Exactly what I'm running. You can actually run the old pump with the newer cover and dampener, just makes the timing marks harder to see but not impossible. Harder if it has power steering, but again not impossible.

I would go with the early timing cover (64 - 69) and then use the original vibration damper for the engine...

With the 60's style timing cover and cast iron water pump, the original style molded radiator hoses will match up with the radiator outlets..

Then put the engine to TDC and make a timing mark with white marker or paint on the damper to match the mark on the timing cover...

Then you don't have to swap the radiator and use flex hoses for the radiator...

And the original 69 style pulleys will work... So will the original alternator mounting brackets...

That's how.mine is
72 cover
340 with forged crank with 318 int. Balancer.
69 water pump and radiator
And power steering.
Timing marks on driver side
T.D.C. mark on balancer on driver side.
as said hard to see , but do able.
I didn't know all that before I brought a new water pump and radiator.
I would have just bought a 70 and up
Pump and radiator had I known.
This site is Awesome to ask before you buy.
So many helpful people with tons of knowledge!

Question...

Is the snout of a 72 crank any different than an earlier one? (ie any reason the harmonic balancer from earlier 67-69 wont fit on 72 up crank?)

For the record, my 67 273 currently has a late cover with timing marks on the drivers side and the metal timing tab from the OE cover bolted to the pass side. everything else is OE 67 273 and works fine. (not sure if 340 is the same dimensionally)

He is using a cast crank so he will have to use the 72 balancer or equivalent with a weight
so to use the 68 69 cover and w/p he will just have to find TDC and mark the balancer on the right side, Problem solved!

The snout is the same, but the keyway is 90° off of the timing marks from the earlier 67 - 69 damper...

Just a thought... if the timing marks are 90 deg off couldn't you use the pass side tin timing plate and use another cylinder that fires 90deg later as the reference (knowing that for TDC of #1 would only be correct on the drivers side cast marker.)

Again just a thought

Just went out and did some investigating with a timing light. Cyl 5 and 8 are 90 deg out from #1, and as Brian6pac pointed out the marks are not exactly 90 off. looks to be 100 deg off (5 deg before on the passenger side is 5 deg after on the drivers side.)

Oh well there goes my thought out the window!

Just to be perfectly clear the key way is the same, but the timing marks are off.

run whatever he wants, just remark the TDC on the balancer.

Here is a homemade timing marker to use the later damper marks on the driver's side on an early cover. Timing tape was added to the damper later and referenced to the 0 mark.

You could just find TDC then mark the damper with timing tape. Lots of ways to skin a cat. I would do it the way I said in the beginning.
