I'd like to wrap up this A518 I'm working on, but there's too much endplay in it (total geartrain). I know you're supposed to set that with a selective 3-tab, but the thickest I've got on hand is a .070". Endplay on a 727 is set with the #1 thrust, so I was thinking "why not use one of those, since I've got dozens of them? And it's basically a 727 up front anyway". Opinions yes/no? BTW, it's for me, I'm not doing anything sketchy with someone else's transmission...

Sure but, when you do that, are the front sealing rings still gonna seal in the hi-drum, and for how long? You are gonna be moving them into a new relationship with the bore which will be partly on new unworn surface and partly over the used maybe rutted previously used surface...... where they won't be touching. So the sealing area will be reduced, and they may suffer accelerated wear. Am I wrong?

Nope, I agree with you. And it would change where the sealing rings on the input shaft line up inside the stator support as well. But, the band surface on the original 3-clutch front drum was shot, so it now has a 4-clutch from a donor 727... and since the pump had enough crap go through it to trash the underside of the stator support, it's been replaced as well. So I don't think there's much chance the rings would have lined back up anyway.

I put a thick washer between the drums and two thin ones on the pump.
How thin of washers do you put on the pump? The thinnest ones I've got are still .047", that seems like a lot to me. Or am I missing something?

Am I the only one who has actually used a depth gauge to measure the distance from the front of the direct drum to the center of the feed holes and compare that to the distance from the pump washer surface to the center of the space between the rings?

Nope, not the first

I never use a direct drum that has ANY ring wear. Those with ring wear are JUNK; and I JUNK them. Now..how about some comments concerning the maximum amount of front thrust washer that is acceptable? Oh, and yes, AJ you are wrong..sorry.
