IIIIIIIIII know the steps are to remove the shafts from the diff and then remove the c clips. But exactly where is the set crew(s) or Bolt(s) that locks in the shafts? And where are the C clips? I don't see them.IIIIIIIIIIi I

You will not see the C clips until you remove the cross shaft retaining bolt.......or roll pin. I don't know which it has. Once you remove the cross shaft, push IN on the axles and the c clips will probably fall off into the housing. You will see the buttons they fit around once you push the axles in with the cross shaft removed.

If I remember right the 7.25 has no c clips and the axles are held in like the 8.75

Correct, no "C clips. Remove the brake drums, then remove the 4 nuts that hold the bearing retainer to the backing plate/axle housing, and pull the axle out. You might need a slide hammer puller, if the bearing is tight in the housing. Some times turning the brake drum around backwards, and putting it on the axle loosly, will work as a slide hammer.
PS: be carefull you don't damage the brake lines, as the backing plate can come off the studs.

No clips. Slide hammer makes it easy. I replaced the axle seals and bearings in mine recently

Gentlemen, I don't know what years, but there are indeed 7 1/4 axles retained by c clips. I have worked on some in the past.

When i get out to shop i will look in my parts manual, and post a photo of the breakdown. Approx 2 hours from now.

RRR, I do think you are correct, but I don't think for "A" bodies, and not for small bolt pattern. I think the "C" clip units were the later FMJ cars, but not sure.

Hey Rich, did you get it apart?

That could be right. As much drive train work as I've done through the years, I know I've done a c clip 7 1/4 but I couldn't tell you what it was in to save my life. I THOUGHT it was in like a 75 or so Dart, but I certainly wouldn't swear to it.

I looked again today to find the bolt that locks in the shafts. Can't find it.
Rusty is correct in #2 according to instructions I found online . My parts book shows the C clips .I can give the part no. There are abt. 6 bolts on each side of the diff hold it together. I wonder if I need to loosen one set? I can't get going on this.

Today I ran across an opportunity to buy a running 273 with the tranny attached.
I am told the engine is clean with a lot of original paint and a friend heard it run.
What do you guys think it is worth with or w/o the tranny?

No. That rear end is like an 8 3/4 in regards to removing the axles. Remove the brake drums. Look behind the axle flange at the brake backing plate around where the axle goes through. You will see 4 nuts around the perimeter of the axle hole in the backing plate. Remove those. Then get a length of chain about 3 feet long. Attach each end to a wheel stud with a lug nut. Then grab the chain in the middle with your hand good and tight. Give a few good hard snatches and that axle should come out. If it doesn't, you'll have to get a slide hammer and an axle adapter and knock it out with the slide hammer.

There are 2 indentations, one will have a 3/16" 12pt bolt. The other indent will have nothing

Just took one apart on a 64. No C clips and the drives side was super tight took a while to get it out. Also the shaft for the spider gears (cross shaft) is held together with a roll pin I had to drive out. Now I did one a few years ago on a 66 Belvedere and it was like a 8 1/4 had the c clips that had to come out and no roll ping had the retaining bolt. Just FYI

I was misled about C clips holding in the axles by a removal blurb at www.mopar1us/axle/. Also a diagram at BigBlockMopar.com shows C clips, but now I think they pertain to holding in spider gears. I did more research in my manuals and they verify what all of you experts are saying - unbolt 4 bolts and pull out the axle. They will be coming out soon. Thank you.

And don't expect them to slip right out, I've had to hammer on them hard to get them out.

Please DO NOT hammer on backside (inner) side of axle flange.
Use a slide hammer bolted to wheel studs.
Or use the "junkyard method " - - Piece of chain (or cable) about 6 to 8 ft long.
One end attached to a wheel stud.
Other end attached to a wheel / tire combination. Place w/t combo near end of axle housing and give a "mighty throw" away from vehicle.
"CAUTION!!! BE AWARE OF FLYING AXLE SHAFT !! -- - - as it (easily) separates itself from the housing.

Just remove four bolts holding the backing plates to axle flange and use a axle puller slide hammer, also make sure you drink some milk those 7.25 rears are tough.

After unbolting, I pulled them out by hand with a little tapping and coaxing.
Maybe it's all that milk I drank as a kid.
Next question: How do I get the bearings off the axles?

Just pulled mine to replace left hand studs with right hand ones.
What is importance of foam gasket ?
Is it needed at all ?
Will a thin film of RTV suffice upon instillation?

Not necessary, I never replaced them in 48 years working on them.

I never did understand the purpose of them. But figured if the factory spent the money for them they had a reason, so I always replaced them. Used to be available from NAPA and inexpensive.
