is the pin that holds the coupler to the steering box and column a solid pin or is it hollow? What’s in mine is split and hollow.... or am I missing the pin entirely and is the split hollow thing I’m looking at a sleeve of some sort? I wish I had a pic but am not near the car currently...... trying to remove the gear box and know this pin has to come out but what it’s there looks pretty fragile to me.

Roll pin IE split and hollow. You need a big *** punch so you can "get up" where you can swing the thing. May or may not help to remove the battery for a little more elbow room

I have a long brass drift that works awesome to pop those out.

Use a pin punch type with a flat bottom, tapered punches can go in the hollow & wedge the pin in tighter.

Either a flat pin like Alaskan Ta or a true pin punch. They are sized for the diameter of the pin and instead of being flat are flat with a small ball shape on the end that fits into the hole of the pin. Either way works but they are tough. Have someone hold your steering wheel tight while hitting. The wheel tend to move since the pin is off set. Good luck and the longer the better.

Like these. Look at the end tip. These are roll pin punches.

I use a roll pin punch.

The pin is a split pin.

Funny thing. When I bought the 150 dollar adapter the pin supplied with mine was realy loose. I **** caned it and just put the original pin back in. Lucky I had saved the pin out of the power box so I had 2 original pins.

You'd think for the price of that dam adapter you'd get the correct pin...

I never had a problem getting that pin out, usually takes minimal effort. Now the solid pin that goes through the steering shaft is TIGHT! I dont pull those out unless the column has to be worked on that requires it. Never seen any wear on that pin anyways.
Just so your aware, there is a very small pin in the top edge of the coupler housing right below where the seal sits. Its purpose is to keep the guts from coming out of the coupler but I have seen them come apart with the pin still in place.

A second person is good for some, but 1970 columns can be rotated & locked in place with the column lockout feature so the pin is oriented correctly.

Oh forgot about that - using my 66 in my head that but did not want to bang against the locking device on my 72’

Got it out with no problem. Three medium taps with my mini sledge on the punch pictured and it shot right out.
Then used my pickle fork as a lever and gently pushed the spline off the coupler. It slid right off. Thanks 67 and the rest of you guys for the replies. Pics.....

In your last two photos, note the distance between the outer column jacket & the shaft ring.

You may have collapsed the pins in the column?

Dunno on that, when using the pickle fork as a lever there was no other tool involved, (hammering, etc).....just a gentle one hand pry motion that easily slid the coupler off. Used the pickle fork as it fit perfectly over the gear spline.
