I'm trying to find out if the 727/904 column shift linkages are the same . I've tried a couple of search's and I can't really find a straight answer . I'm trying to sort out the tranny to column linkage .

From what I remember No. The 904 is a smaller then the 727 so the cross shaft has to be longer. And I not quite sure on this part of it but I think it is clocked a little bit differently. I have lots of linkages for sale and some are just a bit wider and the clocking is off ever so slightly. Kim

What car and what tranny and from what tranny to what tranny. What problem r u running into. I know I had a hell of a time when I went from 6/904 to a 340/727 in a 68 dart many years ago. I also know the little bracket that bolts on the tranny ear that there is a few different ones.

Following this post.
Does anyone have an overall measurement of the shaft for the 727. I read that one for the 904 is longer due to being a smaller transmission?

I just bought what is suppose to be 727/340 linkage but its the same as my 904/6 linkage . I'm going to try and install it this weekend and I'll let everyone know . They way things have gone for me on this car , I probably don't have the right parts yet .

Ok I got shift linkage installed tonight , I'm going to post some pics and try and explain my procedure . The pic posted here are the parts I used except for the shift lever , these parts came from my 904/6 and are identical to the parts I bought that were suppose to be from a 727/340 .

On the transmission side I trimmed some of the bracket for clearance . The actual shift assembly measured roughly 9" from the mounting plate to the shaft end . Working over headers was a challenge and the shift assembly needed some persuasion getting lined up but once in place it worked fine . The shift arm to the transmission didn't need any adjustment as I was using the 727/340 set up . The shift lever pictured was from my 904/6 and it looked like you could flatten out the arm out and use it on the 727 but with offset I'm not sure if there would be some sort of clearance issue . I hope the pics help .

The torque shaft on a 904 is an inch longer than a 727.You can force it in to use on a 727 and sometimes it works but it won't be quite right.the ear on the transmission is different as well...i think installing a 904 bracket under the tab on a 727 will get it close.

I got mine in and it seems to work fine but yes there is a lot of shaft length going through the bushing . I never thought about cutting the length to make installation easier . Seems like with some mods the 904 can be made to work and if you're like me " penny pinching " its worth the effort . To clarify something " a lot of shaft length going through the bushing " is not all bad .

If you shorten the torque shaft take an inch out between the linkage arms.
Index it in 2 places and weld.

I understand what your saying but I have a torque shaft from my 904/6 and my other one was supposed to be from a 727/340 , they were identical when laid side by side and I have no issue with things lining up with my 727/360 . Seems like what is an issue for one car might not be an issue for another car with identical configurations . Now I can move on to the next phase of my swap .

Thanks for posting. The manual shift arm u have is definitely from a 904. So is the bracket that is on the top right. 727 is a straight arm. Kim

Yes definitely a 904 lever but what's odd when lay it against a 727 lever the rod hole clocks the same as the 727 lever . I assume if you try and use the 904 lever there is some sort of interference with the tranny case . Since my tranny was already installed and room for my hands was minimal I didn't try the 904 lever . I wished I had checked the different levers when my tranny was on the floor , might have learned something .

The rod that goes from the column to the cross shaft is the SAME . The bracket that holds the cross shaft to the frame is the SAME . The cross shaft that goes from the frame to the tranny is the same , except , the 904 is longer because the case is smaller . The bracket that bolts to the tranny that holds the cross shaft is DIFFERENT from 904 to 727 . The adjuster rod that goes from the cross shaft to the tranny lever are different but you can use just about any rod as long as it has an adjustment . Now , the tranny lever , this is what is different . You must get the right one or you won't get a proper adjustment . B&M offers one and TCI does also if you don't have one already . I went through this last year . Couldn't get it adjusted right . Frustrating ! I spent hours and a friend fixed it in 5 minutes . I have parts if you need them . Later , Tom

My cross shaft and linkage are in place and seems to work fine . I stated earlier that I did some trimming on the tranny bracket (904) for the cross shaft but thats it and I did use the 727 shift lever .
