need tuning help on 340

-
did some more checking today on my timing.when I set my total to 34 at around 3000 to 4000 rpm's my initial is at 22.I have my balancer marked at 34 for the break-in,so I could set it there at 2000 r's.At idle, that 34* mark is setting at 12* atdc.I rev the motor up to 3 to 4 grand and the 34* mark moves to 0.It seems that I only have a total of 12* in weighted advance in the dist.does this sound correct?:realcrazy: thanks.

your math is good.and
the D is working correctly.
IMO tho, for break-in, the engine is gonna like more than 40 or even up to 50 degrees; I never really check. I leave the Vcan working, set the initial to 14ish, fire it up, get the Rs up asap, then just pull on the D until the rpm peaks. Then it's checking for leaks/etc. Then as the engine warms up, I just back it up a hair, to keep her happy. I never really pay attention to the actual break-in timing number.
After the break-in, then I have to go back and set it properly.
IMO tho, 22* is a lot of timing for a streeter; it really depends on the combo. But you can figure that out later when you do the Transfer-Slot Synchronization, after the cam has been broken in.
For now; do your best to ensure NO fuel leakage. Nothing is scarier than 30 seconds into the break-in, and you got a fuel leak to deal with.
On that note; I pull the stat out and instead install a restrictor washer; at least I don't have to deal with an overheating engine. Then I keep running water on hand in case the rad can't deal with it.
Oh, and I push the car out of the garage and out to the end of the driveway, cuz if it catches fire at least I still have a garage. I live in a rural town, and we have a volunteer fire-department, and most of the time there will be a minimum 10 minute delay........ even tho the firehouse is just across the alley from me.
All the best to you.
