So I a freshly rebuilt 727 w/shift kit, and I am running a 2400 stall hooked up to a 440, about to hook them up what fluid for the converter, standard tranny fluid, or some short trick shift or some thing else? I always put a quart in the converter before hooking it up, what are your I ideas, thanks.

My guy that builds my race car trannys says just to use dextron 3.

i have a ptc 3000 stall converter in my rebuilt 904 with red clutches and kolene steels, transgo 2 shift kit....I use regular valvoline atf4 from walmart...

The stuff that was recommended/engineered for way back when was Dexron. ATF 4 is expensive but its fully synthetic, higher heat range, probably overkill for a 727 but itll work fine. Type F is no good.

I use Allison synthic but i get for free and use it in all my stuff even my o6 dodge diesel.

Been using Type F for 20 yrs in 904 trans.

TF's will run on almost anything, but they run better on Dexron. Type F hasnt been recommended since 1980, Ill digress: Type F isn't the best choice.

Recycled french fries oil here, and now every time I drive by McDonalds I think I might have a trans problem.
Higher end chain transmisssion shops use Dexron 3 in everything unless the customers ask's for and supply's what they want in it.
Royal Purple is one that is most commonly requested for hotrods but it's probably just Dexron 3 with blue dye in it anyway.

Can't go wrong with Dexron

I raced a hemi superstocker for 14 yrs. with type F , my trans builder was my partner back then, he recommended it .
Running it now in my 440/505 727.
Dick Maxwell , known as the godfather of the hemi , said in a Chrysler drag seminar in OKC one time many racers are running it with great success . I`ve used it in every 727 I owned -------------
3500-3800 stall behind "supposedly" 755 h.p. (engine programs, not dyno)

Type F should be fine in a drag car but...Type F was designed for Fords that used bronze clutches; the last trans made with bronze clutches was the Cruise-o-matic. It was spec'd up until certain 1980 Ford builds.

"...Mobil Type F ATF is not recommended for automatic transmissions in (newer) Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, American Motors, or any other cars requiring a Dexron-II, Dexron-IIE, Dexron-III..." Mobil

Something about lower shear pressure, lower max temperature, higher wear characteristics and generally poorer long term characteristics than Dexron xx. Now it does shift faster (B&M slick shift is supposedly Type F) so its probably fine in a drag car or limited use application.

Seven year old thread.....is alive!!!!!!!

Btw....Type F in both of mine, kolene steels and red alto clutches.

I usually just dump the old fluid back in. Or I'll use the conglomeration of used fluid that I drain out of the bench jobs that come in. They're normally filled with new fluid.

type F and a quart of 10/30 in my 727 with 4200 stall. same transmission used with 3 different engines over the past 35 years. the tranny builder who recommended this combo to me is long gone, but the 727 keeps on ticking.

Rossi used to sell "High Performance Automatic Transmission Fluid" until the Feds found out it was just 10wt motor oil.
