Question about carbs for tunnel rams

-
Just had a thought, does anyone think i'll have a clearance problem with this MSD distributor against the tunnel ram top?

IDK how wide the diameter is on that distributor (model number?) But I can dummy up the intake on a block for a guesstimate.

As I’m looking at that picture, the vacuum advance may be a small issue. That is easy to adjust for. Just move the intermediate gear over a few teeth and resell in the distributor.

My msd cap is a bit cone shaped and smaller at the top. If it wasn't it would hit the tunnel ram. It's really close. But that's the 1995. I think....

Because it has mechanical secondaries without a secondary accelerator pump and only an orifice plate for secondary fuel metering, it's no wonder these carbs are widely regarded as one of the most difficult (some claim downright impossible) to tune carburetors built. In all out performance, double pumpers are much better, and for mostly street usage, a set of edelbrock manual choke carbs are much easier to live with.

I’ll second the Edelbrock carbs for street use. Jet it, set it, forget it, your good to go. You may not get every last ounce of potential power, but you’ll about never mess with them ever again. Just keep the tops and bleeds clear and clean.

For tunnel rams, Bolley still suggests there 660 center squirters. Or a small verity of DP carbs. Anything from the 390’s, 450 or.. wait... I’m getting dizzy again from to many choices of carbs that I consider a PIA.

While the Holley will out power the Edelbrock, what are we really doing here? Chasing the money in a heads up run?

I have heard that the manual choke models are jetted more for performance and the electric choke models are jetted to be more emission friendly. I would think your best drivability/user friendly combination would be 500 cfm performers with manual choke.

Agreed. Edelbrock has two 500cfm carbs for dualquad useage. 1 electric choke, one manual choke in which you’ll set for permanently open or remove the choke plate. The AVS style carbs are the best bet IMo since you can tune the opening of the secondary side. Your more than likely are going to need 2 tuning kits. One for each carb. The carbs are for use on the dual plane dual quad intake manifold set up.

The question of size is a good one. The next size carb up is 600cfm. Is your engine up for 1200 cfm?
1.000 is a lot.

Weather you choose the Edelbrock’s offerings or go with the Holley selections, no sense going crazy in cfm.

Hmmm ok when i get back from work tonight I'm going to start looking at Edelbrocks. Any model in particular i should look at?
Of course I've called the Edelbrock tech line and it's just somebody who's reading off a book with they want to recommend for you which will probably be the two five hundred carburetors. These will work probably the best but I wouldn't know. I use a 625 Carter performance with electric choke on the back and a 1406 that I don't have the electric choke hooked up to on the front. Which is a 600 CFM. I've got another Edelbrock 1406 sitting on the bench that I'm about to rebuild and match the two. when I called the tech line and told them what I had the guy was just flabbergasted like he couldn't even understand how the car can run. I believe that's because he just answered phones and makes recommendations out of the book Although I've been driving on the street and drag racing it for many years now that way. What works for me best is a wideband O2 sensor. That allows me to see where I'm at at idle and where I'm at at Full Throttle and part throttle and stuff like that. I just try to set them both up identical as I can. And again it's like people say you can just set them and forget them once you get them set up. I don't feel they're not the ultimate in performance, but again I don't like to fiddle with them three times a day. also I found the Edelbrock line up nicely for the linkage you don't have to buy some kind of expensive Holly sideways linkage to get them to work. I go back and forth between Progressive and one-to-one linkage also...

I should say I started a thread looking for the correct and in my case as always the cheapest LOL rebuild kit..

lol don't we all try to get the cheapest way out? I do, Mopars are not cheap to build at the best of times.
So thanks to you all for the replies, the reason i was looking at holleys is because my friend who built the engine really knows holleys pretty well, and doesn't have much experience with edelbrock carbs (at least that's what he told me), that's why i was asking opinions on those tunnel ram holleys i posted up the link to earlier.

Nothing beats experienced hands.
I do *think* so.

Only have experience with the standard Edelbrock AFB style 500cfm carbs on tunnelrams and they work well on tunnelrams.
However i have tried both AVS and AFB style Edelbrock carbs of various sizes in single carb applications and the AVS is alitle nicer giving alitle more tunability to the secondary side, but i can see how the AVS adjustment can become alitle difficult to get equal betwen the carbs in a dual carb appliction.

Just an fyi, when I ran the Holley 390s, since they were vacuum secondary, needed to get the below kit so the secondaries opened at the same time.

Thanks again everyone, i decided to repaint my car, im nearly done so now i want to buy the carbs. I have decided to go with the Edelbrock Thunder Series 500 cfm AVS Carburetor electric choke 1803, and the manual choke 1804. Can someone please point me in the right direction regarding all linkages i need to make it operate? Is there a kit? Car is a manual if that's makes a difference.
Thanks, Joe.

Yeah that's easy. Those two will hook up with simple Edelbrock dual quad linkage..
